Picture this... it's your second day as a British Airways flight attendant and you’re already living the aviation nightmare. 😅
Yesterday afternoon (May 16), on BA217 from Heathrow T5 to Washington Dulles, a brand new crew member on literally his second flight ever heard the captain say 'Cabin doors to automatic' during pushback... and thought it meant 'open the damn door.'
Boom... he yanks the handle on Door 3L. Emergency slide deploys full send onto the tarmac. Fire trucks roll in thinking it's a real evac. The 26-year-old Boeing 777-200ER (G-VIIY) sits there for over SIX HOURS while engineers swap the slide and check everything.
That one mistake cost BA a fortune... new slides aren't cheap, plus lost slots, crew hours, etc. Passengers were stuck on the plane or gate for ages.
As someone who's been through the training, they DRILL this into you: door ops are sacred. One wrong move and you're suspended + retraining. Poor guy must be mortified.

Testing the emergency evacuation slides on the A380, the world’s largest passenger aircraft.
Emergency slides on all aircraft are tested on a scheduled basis. They are then removed and sent to a slide shop, where they are physically inspected, serviced, and repacked before being returned to service.

Lufthansa flight LH1753 evacuated in Athens after returning to the airport when the crew received an APU fire warning and reported smoke in the rear of the cabin.
Lufthansa confirmed that three passengers suffered minor injuries during the evacuation on Monday and were transferred to a hospital in Athens for first aid treatment.
A spokesperson for the airline said, "The crew of the Airbus A321, following the standard procedures, declared a state of air emergency in flight, in order to obtain priority landing clearance. During the evacuation process, three passengers were slightly injured and taken to a hospital for first aid. The safety of passengers and crew is our absolute priority."
🔴 The German carrier Condor Airlines has updated its baggage policy as of May 1st, making it noticeably more generous across all cabin classes.
On the carry-on side, the standard cabin bag allowance is now 55x40x23 cm, and the personal item limit has been bumped up to 40x30x15 cm.
Starting next year, checked baggage limits increase across the board. Economy passengers will be allowed 23 kg instead of the previous 20 kg. Premium Economy moves from 25 kg to 32 kg. Business Class travelers get two bags, each now capped at 32 kg instead of 30 kg.
Perhaps more importantly, Condor is scrapping its old destination-based weight rules entirely. One unified policy will apply across the whole network, which should significantly reduce confusion at check-in and simplify connections with partner airlines.
According to Condor COO Christian Schmitt, this is a deliberate step in the airline's transition from a leisure carrier into a full network airline with its own route network and international partnerships. Standardized baggage rules align Condor with what passengers already expect from other network carriers.

An investigation is underway after a United Airlines Boeing 767-424 struck a light pole on the New Jersey Turnpike as it was landing at Newark Liberty International Airport on Sunday afternoon, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
Flight UA169 that originated in Venice, Italy, with 221 passengers and 10 crew members on board, landed safely just after 2 p.m. No injuries were reported.
"Upon its final approach into Newark International Airport, United flight 169 came into contact with a light pole. The aircraft landed safely, taxied to the gate normally and no passengers or crew were injured. Our maintenance team is evaluating damage to the aircraft and we will investigate how this occurred," the airline said in a statement.

🔴 @Delta is cutting in-flight service on 450 daily flights starting May 19, and frequent flyers are NOT happy about it.
From that date, any flight under 350 miles in economy will get zero service. Nothing. Not even water. That covers a lot of routes people fly every single week for work.
The old system had an express service on flights of 251 to 499 miles, which was coffee, tea, or water. That is now gone entirely for shorter hops.
Now, to be fair, there is a flip side. Around 600 daily flights in the 350 to 499 mile range are actually getting upgraded from express to full beverage service. So more people overall will get a proper drink cart. First class keeps full service across the board regardless of distance.

After losing a job he clearly loved, he told passengers: “I don’t remember any of the bad times… just the good ones.”
Spirit Airlines is expected to halt operations as soon as Saturday after days of warnings and rising jet fuel costs worsened its financial crisis. Passengers at its home base in Fort Lauderdale are being told they could be among the last to fly with the airline. https://t.co/mITqsLlb5r
NEW: Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says the Biden administration’s blocked JetBlue–Spirit merger led to Spirit’s liquidation:
“This is not better for pricing. This is not better for competition. Actually, it’s worse.”
BREAKING: Spirit Airlines may cease operations as soon as Saturday, as negotiations over a $500 million government aid package have stalled. And sources familiar with the discussions tell CBS News that there will be no last-minute administration effort to force a bailout.
