Keith Porter’s murder wasn’t captured on camera, so it’s allowing ICE to sweep it under the rug, but we need to keep talking about him just as much as we talk about Renee Good and Alex Pretti. None of us are safe from this campaign of state violence.
This father was doing all of his legal immigration check-ins and had no criminal record.
He’s one of those heroic parents who dedicated his life to taking care of his disabled son, whom he was told would not live past five without a miracle.
As his son said, his father was his miracle, and he lived a meaningful, well loved life deep into adulthood. Then ICE snatched his father — and his son, as predicted, died without him. ICE did not let him attend the funeral.
I keep seeing people say she was "well connected" but nobody has explained how. Having a wealthy family doesn't mean you're connected in *publishing*! ofc wealth makes life easier, but saying Kuang got a book deal "because her family is wealthy" doesn't actually show cause/effect
it gives you the advantage of time/ability to pursue publishing (HUGE), but *by itself* wealth does not get you a book deal. in order to be "handed" a book deal you either need to have some sort of platform (be famous/an influencer/a politician), or have industry connects (cont.)
…. How does wealth not give you an advantage in the publishing industry. It literally gives you an advantage in every industry. I’m not saying she bribed someone its just that someone without her money would most likely not have gotten so far so young.
(which is not automatic if you have wealth). going to an ivy also means nothing for getting published (you may have received more writing training at your educational institution, but there is no degree needed for a book deal, nor is a degree relevant to publishing consideration)
(though I'm also pretty sure Kuang went to Oxford on a full ride. Certainly privilege involved in being able to develop the kind of resume needed for that but I don't think that's what people are saying!)
it started as a tweet. for everyone who told me to write down all my dating stories:
FALLING IN LUCK, a speculative romance novel inspired by a decade of awful dates, will be hitting shelves in early 2027.
Let’s elect a progressive mayor.
Let’s elect a progressive city council.
Let’s elect a progressive park board.
This is our chance to build progressive power. 💪🏾

@GeauxGabrielle Strange to me that protests like No Kings in America are bureaucratically organized, scheduled and planned... sounds a lot like concerts or carnivals, designed to blow off steam rather than put a boundary or oppositional force against anything.
