I don’t know exactly what it was about this eagle mama, Jackie. 🦅💔

Maybe because I started watching her during the pandemic, when we were all looking for small windows into the world outside. My kids used to tease me for leaving the Nest cam on 24/7, hearing her calls echo through the house. Me goofily screaming “Look, Shadow brought home a big fish” Maybe it’s because I’m a mama of four and understand that instinct to protect your babies with everything you’ve got.

Whatever it was, I fell in love with Jackie.

She was regal, fierce, and deeply devoted. I watched her through so many cycles: eggs laid and lost, predators striking, heartbreak, and still she kept coming back to try again. I saw eaglets hatch, grow strong, and take their first flights, and through it all, Jackie just kept showing up.

With her life partner Shadow they built their nest, and weathered everything from Big Bear storms to even the Fourth of July fireworks. Together, they were something truly special.

I’ve always loved eagles, but the Big Bear Valley nest cam made me understand just how incredible they are. Jackie made millions of us care about one nest in a tree like it was our own backyard.

I hate that we lost her like this. 💔 My heart breaks for Shadow and the life he now has to navigate without her.

Jackie, you magnificent mama, you were loved by people all over the world. Thank you for letting us into your wild, beautiful life.

I never thought I’d be eulogizing a daggone eagle. 😭🦅

But here we are.

Fly high, Jackie. You were one special mama. 🤍

Happy 82nd Birthday to Smokey Bear!

Smokey's dedication to raising awareness about fire safety has made a lasting impact on wildfire prevention.

The historic photo shows the 14-year-old Smokey visiting Grand Canyon National Park in 1958, to celebrate the 1st day of issue of the U.S. Forest Conservation Postage Stamp.

As much as we love Smokey, we do have to make one thing clear—Smokey does *NOT* work for the National Park Service. Instead, he's a proud employee of our friends at the US Forest Service and the Department of Agriculture, which helps to manage 154 National Forests, 20 National Grasslands, and 193 million acres of public lands in total. He's a very busy bear!

Grand Canyon National Park has a close relationship with the US Forest Service. Kaibab National Forest borders the park to both its north and south, and the park works closely with the US Forest Service for fire prevention and containment.

In addition, when Grand Canyon National Monument was established in 1908, in the absence of a National Park Service (Which wouldn't be established until 1916), it was the US Forest Service that was tasked with managing and protecting what would eventually become Grand Canyon National Park.

Here's to many more years of inspiring us all to be better stewards of the land and protecting our public lands for future generations!

Ryan Blaney is running a Kyle Busch tribute helmet at Iowa, which incorporates the paint schemes from several of Busch's winning cars through the years.

Two of those include Busch's 2019 championship M&M's car and the Interstate Batteries car from his 200th total NASCAR win earlier that year.
