I went to an anime convention in the Middle East.
This was the very first edition of Animenia in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E.

Late night overthinking/worried myself into crying but I have a purring 15 week old kitten laying right next to my head on my pillow and making biscuits on my shoulder. So now I’m crying still because I forgot how much I miss having a cat to cheer me up when I’m hurting.
Me: Cat Distribution System please pick me. The cat-shaped hole in my heart grows painful.
System: ok ok hear me out- Himalayan and Persian
Me: I… don’t have hundreds/thousands to drop on designer cats?
System: who said anything about money? They just need a new home :)

Something else I found out later was Arabic-dubbed anime? A show MY MOTHER watched when SHE WAS A KID. Grendizer first came to Lebanon in 1979 and was HUGE in the Middle East.
One of the first super robot series in the mecha genre. Think about that.

When I would visit Lebanon growing up, I found out later in life that a lot of the cartoons I watched were anime dubbed in Arabic!
Captain Tsubasa (to me he was Captain Najid), Future Boy Conan (Adnan & Lina), Pokémon, Digimon, Dragonball Z, and some Inuyasha!

@Toastythunder1 Thank you!! Experiencing an anime convention in another country yet not feeling out of place *because* the language/culture is something familiar to me… I didn’t realize would make me so emotional. I was so moved that I couldn’t not share, as someone with ‘a foot in both doors’
