Machines are not training wheels.
Machines stabilise the load so all the effort goes into the target muscle. They allow heavy work in lengthened positions without the spine acting as the limiting factor. They let an injured lifter keep training around an injury. They let a fatigued lifter accumulate productive work without the nervous system tax of stabilising a free weight.
A leg extension done with full effort, full range, and the right load is hypertrophy. A back squat done with bouncing knees and a collapsed torso is theatre.
The barbell purists will tell you machines are for beginners. The barbell purists are mostly intermediate lifters with cranky lower backs who could grow more in a year of intelligent machine work than they have grown in three years of grinding through compounds their structures were never built for.
Use the tool. Move on.
