There’s some quirk in physics where, if there’s a small hole in a bag of mulch it will leak all over your vehicle.
But if you rip a giant hole in the bag and try to dump it out into your landscaping, almost none will fall out.
It's amazing how echoes of this simple interaction exist in everything related to fictional power fantasies. Thor Jensen really got to the root of it in 10 words
I barely survived “telling writers they have to read is gatekeeping,” I don’t think I can live through “telling writers they have to write is gatekeeping”
“Why are they so worried about that?” Well one reason is that when you grow up and watch people online get ripped apart by strangers for just existing, you develop a fear of it happening to you
“There is a crime here that goes beyond denunciation. There is a sorrow here that weeping cannot symbolize. There is a failure here that topples all our success. The fertile earth, the straight tree rows, the sturdy trunks, and the ripe fruit. And children dying of pellagra must die because a profit cannot be taken from an orange. And coroners must fill in the certificate- died of malnutrition- because the food must rot, must be forced to rot. The people come with nets to fish for potatoes in the river, and the guards hold them back; they come in rattling cars to get the dumped oranges, but the kerosene is sprayed. And they stand still and watch the potatoes float by, listen to the screaming pigs being killed in a ditch and covered with quick-lime, watch the mountains of oranges slop down to a putrefying ooze; and in the eyes of the people there is the failure; and in the eyes of the hungry there is a growing wrath. In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage.”
Y’all get really mad when people you deem “undesirable/undeserving” are openly loved. And it’s usually rooted in “how is this person you see as beneath you able to find love and community” that you, as a “deserving” person, can’t. Whole time that nasty spirit is why.
Had a couple folks ask for my process!
I start with thinking of the design through a macro lens of shape/size ratios and overall silhouette to give the composition a focal point and then I begin to refine that initial idea and all its details 🧵(1/3)
recent BG practices!! i'm trying to see how i can adjust my environments to my general art style which has become very line-heavy and contrast-rich in recent months
Here’s some sketches exploring one of my ideas for the creature from “The Terror” by Dan Simmons, and how I imagined it could work as a supernatural element while still able to be mistaken for a polar bear at a glance or in the distance~
"How do I find my art style?"
I've been a creative pro for 10 years, this is the number 1 question I get.
They want creative work to be recognizably theirs in an instant-- like Miyazaki or Wes Anderson movies.
This is the formula for art style, it's much simpler than you think.
@portaltohades I had one about ten years ago to remove a cyst. For about two weeks I just had to take it easy and wear stretchy leggings to keep pressure off the scars. The cuts themselves are on the small side and they healed relatively fast. Good luck! 🙏🤞
