As a serial rewriter, I think the secret to playwriting might be to rewrite and rewrite until you've broken something that was crucially important about the play up until that moment, but always needed to be broken so the play could be finished.

Or, write until you've fixed the dramaturgy problems that have poisoned the play since the unplanned first draft.

This is to say if you want a development process but don’t have access to one at the moment, make some friends and a frittata. It’s a pretty good stopgap.

I’m a very lucky playwright to have plenty of actor friends who will come over and eat frittata and read several drafts of scenes when I’m afraid I’ve lost sight of the play 🥰🥰🥰
