CeraVe contains benzoyl peroxide and independent stability testing reveals that benzoyl peroxide (BPO) drug products are thermally unstable under elevated temperatures.

When exposed to prolonged heat—such as an accelerated shelf-life testing temperature of 50°C (122°F) over several days to weeks—the BPO molecule degrades, forming the human carcinogen benzene. This degradation can cause benzene accumulation to significantly exceed the FDA’s conditional concentration limit of 2 ppm.

Consequently, manufacturers and consumers must adhere to proper storage protocols to mitigate thermal degradation risks.
