Had a new rescue in a few days ago. This is Fizz and he was just diagnosed with a rare condition called DIM or Disseminated Idiopathic Myofasciitis.
This causes extreme fevers, sudden paralysis or partial loss of mobility, and degeneration of muscles throughout the body. It's generally detected through muscle tissue sampling but in every case we've also seen an enormous Neutrophil count as shown in the image below. This helped us identify and successfully fight the condition in two previous ferrets named Mocha and Hawk.
Right now there is no known cause for DIM which is why it has "Idiopathic" in the name. More research, time, and awareness is needed to help fix this. Once our rescue building is complete we're going to be diverting funds to push on DIM, Insulinoma, and Adrenal disease as much as possible. These are some of the biggest pain points for ferret health right now.
Science moves slowly and then all at once when breakthroughs happen. The more we all work together the more we can make a difference. Thank you for supporting us and what we do.
