Here’s the reality behind these wage rises:

• NLW jumped to £12.21 last April
• Now rising again to £12.71 (+4.1%)
• 18–20 rate up 8.5% to £10.85
• Apprentices going up 6% to £8.00

Sounds supportive ! but with tax thresholds frozen, workers keep very little of that increase. Most of it disappears into tax, NI, pensions and rising living costs.

Meanwhile businesses take 100% of the cost increase + NI + pensions + holiday pay with zero offset.

And the sectors hit the hardest?
The trades and personal services that rely on hands-on skilled labour:
Electricians, plumbers, hairdressers, barbers.
These are professions where wages rise instantly hit small employers’ margins.

This is also why apprenticeships are being cut back.
A small business can’t afford to hire a learner when wage costs rise faster than revenue - and an apprentice can’t generate enough income early on to cover themselves.

Workers feel no better off.
Businesses absorb the cost.
Apprenticeships vanish.
We all continue to experience hardship
