One of the easiest ways to manufacture a scandal is to crop a private conversation before the rest of the conversation answers the question.

That is exactly what is happening with the Fauci texts released Monday by Senators Johnson and Paul.

Here is the full chain from January 25-26, 2021.

Vivek Murthy asked the group whether there was any reason to prefer vaccinating early or late in pregnancy. Fauci's first answer was reassuring: there were no data or theoretical reason to prefer either, and the idea that an mRNA vaccine alters your genes is a misconception.

Then, about two hours later, he came back on his own. He said he had “asked around a bit more” and something else had come up that they needed to be aware of: because many people develop significant fever and cytokine responses after the second dose, this “theoretically could be associated with miscarriage in the 1st trimester.”

Nobody pulled that out of him. He went looking, found a theoretical concern, and pushed it to the people writing public guidance.

And it was a scientifically literate concern. Maternal fever in early pregnancy is a recognized obstetric concern. That is exactly the sort of potential risk you investigate rather than ignore.

The next day, when the WHO advised against Moderna vaccination during pregnancy except in certain circumstances, Fauci laid out where the evidence actually stood: animal toxicology studies had raised no red flags, more than 10,000 pregnant women had already been vaccinated with no issues arising, and FDA, ACIP and ACOG guidance allowed pregnant women to choose vaccination. His position was that where data are lacking in pregnant women, potential risks have to be weighed against benefits, and COVID itself poses risks during pregnancy.

Nine days later, publicly, he noted that the trials had excluded pregnant women and that post-authorization monitoring had found, with the caveat that they still had to be careful, “no red flags about that, about pregnant women.”

Is the public version less granular than a private text between three officials? Yes. Public statements usually are. That difference proves nothing about intent.

The accusation is that he knew of a danger and told the public the opposite. The record shows him raising a theoretical concern, checking it against the available evidence, finding the evidence reassuring, and saying so privately and publicly with essentially the same caveat attached.

Then people jump ahead to August 30, 2021, when Fauci said it was “pretty clear that pregnant women should get vaccinated.”

That is not a contradiction. That is seven months of accumulating evidence.

By then, v-safe and the Vaccine Safety Datalink had accumulated vastly more pregnancy data. A VSD analysis covered 105,446 pregnancies, including 13,160 spontaneous abortions, and found no increased odds of COVID vaccination in the 28 days before miscarriage compared with ongoing pregnancies. CDC has since cited data involving more than a million vaccinated pregnancies with no increased miscarriage risk.

Miscarriage was common long before COVID, occurring in roughly 10-15% of recognized pregnancies. Any honest search for a safety signal has to account for that baseline. The studies looked. The signal was not there.

Confidence in August 2021 that was unavailable in January 2021 is not a lie. It is what updating on evidence looks like. If his language had never changed as the data came in, that would be the actual scandal.

There is a real debate buried in here, and it deserves to be had honestly: should public messaging have surfaced the theoretical fever concern more explicitly so people could weigh it themselves? Reasonable people can argue that. It is a question about informed consent and how uncertainty should be communicated at scale.

But that is not the claim being made.

The claim is that he knew and lied.

The transcript is right there, and it says the opposite.

So now, Congress can repass the bill and it becomes law, or if the president takes no action on it in 10 days (not including Sundays) it will automatically become law. So, expect it to become law on July 3rd.
