Qamar Ahmad
You went out as you always did, satchel in hand, the Press Club waiting, the day unfinished. And the heart that had beaten through seven decades of cricket, through four hundred and fifty Tests and more, the heart that had carried Karachi and Lord’s and the whole turning world inside it, said quietly: enough now. Rest.
Listen. There is a thing the reed says when it is cut from the reed bed. It cries. All night it cries for the place it was taken from, and everyone who hears it thinks they understand, but only the reed knows the wound.
You, Q, were such a reed. Seventy years you sang the game, and we mistook the singing for the man. We did not hear the longing underneath. We do not, ever, until the song stops. ❤️
Gratitude is the attitude. Trying to develop from the grassroots, I’m thankful to the management of Ghani Glass for this great opportunity and for trusting me to head this amazing team!
Very saddened to hear of the passing of the generous and large hearted Qamar Ahmad or Q, as we inevitably called him. He helped me a lot on my first tour of England in 1990 where I was a wide-eyed novice on most matters. And I won't forget his emotionally told story of going back to the family village in India, while on tour with Pakistan, where he was warmly received with stories of his father. Always greeted me with a hearty laugh. I have only warm memories of Q and I will be surprised if anyone else has any other. Khuda Hafiz Q Bhai. Salaam.
