7 YEARS SINCE THE LANDMARK RULING
Today, July 12, marks the 7th Anniversary of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) ruling that invalidated China’s expansive maritime claims in the South China Sea.
In 2013, the Philippines, led by former President Benigno Aquino III, took the case to the PCA to challenge China’s expansive nine-dash-line claim. This claim was disputed by the Philippines, arguing that it encroached upon its exclusive economic zone and continental shelf.
On July 12, 2016, the PCA made a landmark ruling. It declared that China’s claims lacked a legal basis and that the disputed areas in question were indeed part of the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone and continental shelf.
