A Kenyan court has just delivered a landmark ruling in a medical negligence case that dragged on for almost two decades.

Naila Qureshi sued Dr Raffique Parker and two others over a hysterectomy procedure done back in 2006.

She says the doctor removed her cervix without her consent, and botched the operation so badly that it caused a vesico vaginal fistula.

The damage cost her her job and her ability to earn a living.

Her husband also joined the suit, citing loss of conjugal life and years of suffering.

Justice Alexander Muasya Muteti found the 1st and 3rd defendants grossly negligent.

The hospital was faulted too, for letting a doctor who had been disbarred in Uganda practice on Kenyan patients.

In the end, the court awarded the family a staggering Kshs 157,207,524.20 in damages.

It is one of the biggest medical negligence payouts ever ordered by a Kenyan court.
