We've seen graphs like this before, back in 2016 when everyone was discovering Roediger and Karpicke's studies on retrieval practice.
They showed that ineffective strategies (like re-study, re-reading etc) worked in the short term, and depressed outcomes in the long term.
Effective strategies (retrieval practice) depressed outcomes in the short term, and boosted them in the long term.
Yet here we are again, with educators and "thoughtleaders" advocating exposing students to AI and letting them use it. There is NO REASON to think that this is a good idea at the moment, and it's why I'm in favour of an outright ban on student facing AI until at least KS5 (and even then only under extremely niche circumstances.)
You can hear me talk about my scepticism more on a podcast I did with @mrbartonmaths - there aren't many AI sceptics left in EdTech...

Fascinating new paper on AI tutors ringing more alarm bells:
"We find that LLMs exhibit Marked Pedagogies: biased instructional orientations drawing from assumptions about student learning needs and identities. While White and high-achieving student attributes received expansive, growth-oriented critique on argumentation, feedback for Hispanic and ELL attributes fixated on grammar, spelling, and formality. For non-White and female attributes, models invoked cultural and gender stereotypes. For students marked as low-achieving or having learning disabilities, LLMs exhibited feedback witholding bias --- an overuse of praise, less substantive critique, and assumptions of limited ability."
I know I'm banging a drum here, but I continue to be staggered at how readily the wider education and edtech sector have pursued the idea of putting "personalised" AI-enabled tutors in front of students. This stuff isn't ready, and may never be.

@IcelandFoods Iceland driver DK68OGS @ 5.20pm on 13/06/23 did a hit and run on my car. Where can I report? Can’t call during work, and obvious continuous redirection to avoid calls on your website. Damaged rear left quarter, it was stationary and parked normally on Western Rd
So now we see the value of education.
£1000, before tax, and a below inflation increase for next year of 4.5%.
Not fully funded.
Less than fire service, doctors, railway workers and the offer to teachers in Wales and Scotland.
That’s how little they value education.
Shout out to every teacher who needs to do 1 hr’s work but is scared it might turn into 3hrs and so remains perpetually conflicted on Sundays.

Teaching is one of the hardest jobs in this country – and one of the most important.
It’s not enough to give teachers praise.
We ought to give them a raise.
A 4-day school week for students is perfect for ALL involved.
TEACHERS can use the 5th day to catch up with their insane workload!
STUDENTS can catch up & participate in ANY off-campus, extra curriculars they’re interested in without the wildness of a minute-to-minute schedule.
MPs just voted on a motion to remove private schools' £1,700,000,000 tax break.
That could pay for free school meals for *all* primary school pupils almost twice over.
But Tory MPs voted it down, choosing to protect elite private schools, not improve opportunities for all kids.
Tomorrow many nurses will be on strike for the first time in their lives
We've been left with no other choice

86% of NEU teacher members have said they would be prepared to strike for a fully funded, above-inflation pay rise. The Government needs to act now. If it doesn’t, we’ll be undertaking a formal ballot for strike action. Keep an eye on your emails for an update next week. #PayUp
“I have a plan for growth” says Rishi Sunak who has delivered the highest inflation in 40 years, the highest taxation in 70 yrs and the biggest drop in living standards since 1956
Some people enjoy slandering others. They do this out of jealousy and envy. Let people judge you by your character. You can’t stop them. Be upright. Be strong. Surely the Almighty is aware of the evil they’re spreading.
