UNC Research is the opportunity to learn more about your sport while playing elite D1 athletics.
Led by @uncexss' Dr. Erianne A. Weight, multiple student-athletes are pursuing the EXSS 290 course which aims to challenge the traditional divide between athletics and academics by exploring the deep connections between sport and STEM.
Through a sociological lens, students are examining how data science, logical reasoning, and critical thinking are central to athletic performance and decision-making. Coursework includes engaging with sports-related data to build STEM competencies, rethinking athlete identity, and imagining educational models that empower both athletes and non-athletes academically and professionally.
This research is part of a $3.4 million National Science Foundation grant led by Weight and colleagues in Exercise and Sport Science at @UNC, and information scientists at the University of Maryland.
