@mattyglesias This is the only exp consistent w/ Musk's posting around '22. Already characterized as a fascist for not precisely toeing the line w "intellectuals" on centrist issues like free markets/race-blindness, he then leaned into this characterization, as commonly observed in normies
@mattyglesias It started that way. Musk forayed into politics w notably milquetoast, "classical liberal" takes he obv expected to be well-received. His radicalization—insofar as it can be called that—is more reactionary than any faction cares to acknowledge. A sort of inverse audience capture
@teafortillerman@xwanyex Think the reason(s) why are pretty straightforward if multifaceted. Long history of educators and media types instructing them in particular to be conscious of biases, long tradition of impartiality as legal principle, plus historical selection in favor of cooperation+compromise
@xwanyex Disagree w LKY on this one. As seen in a certain recent highly publicized trial, voir dire does a decent job of screening partisan jurors—you're going to rely on the impartiality of the judge in either case, so I'd rather that be in more limited context. Bias still slips thru ofc
@DrewPavlou They're only allowed to do this because as a character Max Cady is an Ellis Island, mystery meat white-type fellow. They even dyed Javier's hair blonde. But the general sentiment is a welcome one.
@xwanyex When I think of British culture I think of the rule of law, the world's first bill of rights, representative democracy, stiff upper lips, self-effacement, the business suit, dry humor, the enlightenment... one could go on. This person thinks of Dua Lipa. It's just a joke.
@xwanyex It's also telling that these examples are ALWAYS drawn from entertainment, media, cuisine, etc. These people are incapable of conceiving of their native culture—their own norms, values, principles—as anything other than the movies they watch. Wholly aesthetic. Fish in water, etc.
@PositivFuturist What's hilarious is he manages to squeeze in blood-and-soil hatred for his next door neighbors, the English, in his tweet defending migrants from the other side of the world literally beheading his countrymen. Lmao.
@ClickingSeason@Madz_Grant@razibkhan They're angry. For this crime of being exposed to gays, they blame Western imperialism, colonialism, etc
In other words they blame the same people/culture/intangible force for pushing homosexuality on them that the Western leftists drawing these vignettes blame for homophobia 🤷
@discountmage@wil_da_beast630 Viewing every man like the worst of men is antisocial and wrong—as prejudicial as it would be w/ any other demographic. The chance this one guy is a psycho-stalker is v low. Men are more dangerous than women but the avg man is harmless; these are not mutually exclusive statements
@ArktikUtka@TheRodged@antidissident I have a close female friend that seemingly takes every opportunity to bring up the biology of both marine and land based isopods. Granted, it's a pretty narrow field of interest, but I've come to appreciate it
@UsingLyft My weird theory is it's not just the features but also past a certain age you can tell what kinds of expressions somebody makes regularly (think smile lines). E.g. this guy looks like he's never had an expression of genuine joy or sadness on his face ever, only rage and contempt
@SunDeafeni29260 @parandeye_zard It's bc places like the middle of Idaho still have a universal culture rather than a collection of atomized & disconnected subcultures. So you need to appreciate local customs to assimilate into the local population. In eg the Bay Area you can self-segregate until the day you die
@n8vb8@parandeye_zard The hilarious thing is that America is the most welcoming country in the world so that's the *worst* shared memory they can reference.
I'm mixed-race and went back and forth between Asia/the US as a child. Kids in Asia are MUCH more likely to bully you for small differences!
@Slatzism This seems insane, is that really all there is to it? He had IBS?
Article doesn't go into detail abt his mental illness beyond suicidal ideation. Maybe I could see it if he was a treatment-resistant schizo, but depression? Suicide gets prescribed to the suicidal over lunch now?
There's an enraging essay by Mary Grabar (adapted from her book) describing the hatchet job Zinn did on Columbus. Wild stuff. The man shamelessly weaponized the ellipsis (...) to distort his journals and make The Admiral look maximally villainous.
Communist scumbag "historians" don't give a damn about what actually happened—they care about crafting a narrative that will advance the Revolution. Zinn taught a generation of "history" teachers, and thus countless students, to hate their country, culture, and civilization.
I was still kind of a lib in 2020 but I was totally unmoved by Floyd’s death. It wasn’t revelatory to me (just an ugly, pointless, small tragedy) and I didn’t think it meant anything. What I’ll always remember was how it felt to remain completely sober while so many people were swept away - it was disorienting to be in a totally different reality than the dominant culture, I almost felt like I was on drugs.
