My first job, Oil and Gas Downstream, was a Sales Engineering Role. The Chairman once told us that he prefer Engineers on the marketing and sales roles than normal commercial guys.

His reason is that while commercial guys are limited to only commercial roles and capabilities, Engineers on the other hand can adapt very fast and play both commercial and technical roles.

The trend of Engineers in the commercial industries has further proved this point.
