Today I have met Lucy, Mark and Katie, Henry Nowak’s mother, father and stepmother. Their courage is extraordinary.
They have endured the most appalling loss, it is a life sentence for them.
They have also faced the agonising decision to release the harrowing body-worn camera footage, knowing how painful it would be and how strongly people would react. They did so because they want truth, accountability and change.
They have asked that we work across political parties and religions to rebuild trust in the police. That trust has been broken because of what happened, and I agree with them on that.
We must also be prepared to examine, carefully and seriously, religious practices or exemptions that permit the carrying of dangerous weapons in public, and other activities that are not conducive to the public good. We also need to examine where the law needs to change.
Henry’s family do not want anger to tear communities apart. They are a family who have friends across faith and race, and so did Henry. His family want his memory to help bring our society together.
Everyone knows I have strong views about how we should deal with equality under the law. What the family agreed with me on is that we need to bring common sense back, and that is what we should all be fighting for.
I promised the family that we will work to ensure there is a positive legacy for Henry out of this tragedy.
That is my focus now.
It's way too hot out there.
The next Conservative government will reverse the aircon ban created by @RobertJenrick, which blocks new homes from being built with air conditioning.
That's the one he's talking about here ⬇️
We have been fighting Labour’s absurd Fuel Duty Hike from the start.
It was clear to everyone but Rachel Reeves that hard working families and drivers across Britain should not be punished, especially while petrol prices are rising.
Finally, Labour have U-turned. Here's why👇
This is hilarious. The Daily Mail has revealed that Andy Burnham was jogging at 12.18pm, then he returned home 45 minutes in his VW Golf.
His jog was just a photo op. Why pretend to jog?
It just makes him look fake and untrustworthy. Something the public hate about politics.
It’s been wall-to-wall Labour, Greens and Reform on the radio in the last few days.
All for the wrong reasons.
The Green leader’s lies, Farage’s dodgy money and Labour wasting taxpayer funds on unnecessary by-elections to save their bacon.
All while Kemi cracks on with her job as Leader of His Majesty’s Opposition, building a range of policies that will take us into the next election with answers to the country’s problems - not just ideas, but Bills which are ready to roll out, costed plans and a plan for a stronger economy.
Young people are hungry for answers! So I spoke to them about:
🇬🇧 What being British means to me
🦁 Why British culture matters
🏠 Why young people feel locked out of the future
⚡ Why aspiration has collapsed
🚫 Why identity politics is poison
📈 The New Deal that Conservatives are offering the next generation and why Conservatives are talking honestly about growth, culture and national confidence.
Here’s the first clip👇
There is an alternative to this Labour chaos.
A better future where we cut spending, lower taxes and deliver cheaper bills.
The @Conservatives team breaks down the Alternative King’s Speech ⬇️
The economy is tanking, our infrastructure is creaking, and the state takes ever more of your paycheck.
Meanwhile Labour are obsessed only with fighting among themselves!
Labour: losses everywhere.
Reform: good gains made by burning thru ~£8mn (10x what you usually spend on locals) yet did worse than last year.
Conservatives: progress on last year, losses in counties set to be abolished but best London results since 2006.
Read more below👇 in my Telegraph article where I explain why, despite the setbacks, I'm encouraged with our results this week.
The Conservative Party is rebuilding steadily, seriously and with purpose. We are not asking people to forget the past but to judge us by what we do next.
I know everyone is poring over election results, but let’s not forget… Today is VE Day.
It’s still living memory and being able to have elections is one of the freedoms fought for.
That freedom was bought by men and women who served our country.
Even now our veterans need defending.
The battles are different…like stopping brave veterans being dragged through the courts for vexatious claims in their old age.
Conservatives continue to fight. Just yesterday, the Supreme Court reinstated immunities after my Shadow Attorney General, Lord Wolfson stepped in, acted pro bono for veterans, and won.
We’re the only party doing the work.
On VE Day, we remember their sacrifice.
But remembrance is not enough. We should also honour our veterans by looking after them and defending them in Parliament, in the courts just as they defended us.
