@GowagsKyle I think there is a need to say “don’t watch the ball, run” to very young players who just stand in the box, watch the ball fly. But often times that message sticks with the player (and the coaches/parents). I have to re-teach this to my middle school softball players every year
@TheEXECUTlONER_ I know this is not the point…but does he say“even the other (parks?) team gives them a few calls and you give us nothing” and then the 2nd dad says at the end “learn the rules, first base isn’t occupied and third base isn’t either”.
What was the disagreement that sparked this?
I know this may not be a big deal to some but I noticed it immediately. The eye contact.
One thing that was instilled in me at a young age was the importance of making eye contact when someone is speaking to you. It’s a simple habit, but it says a lot. It shows respect. It shows that you’re present and paying attention.
That’s why it’s something I emphasize at every clinic I run. When I’m teaching, I expect athletes to look me in the eye. Not because I’m trying to be super strict, but because learning how to communicate, listen, and show respect will take them much further than anything I can teach them about fielding a ground ball or swinging a bat.
While I don’t know Coach Murphy or Jocelyn Briski, the fact that this is something she naturally does tells me a lot about her character and the program that helps shape her.
Softball is about so much more than softball.
@balkwhisperer@Hirsch_Tweets@BravesStash So proper sequence would be appeal he missed. If ruled safe then ask for review? Can you challenge the tag and the missed plate at that point?
The older I get, the more I realize that success at most things isn't about finding the one trick or secret nobody knows about. It's consistently doing the boring, mundane things everyone knows about but is too unfocused/undisciplined to do.
Get good at boring.
These are the types of calls challenges were meant for. Umps are human and sometimes can’t see everything. There should be a “if we can’t tell by watching it two or three times the call stands” type of rule. 30 seconds or it stands.
Tom Coughlin said, "You never want an opponent to see you in anything, but strength."
"You don't want bad language. You don't want that as a stamp of who you are."
Your body language speaks before you do.
Your presence, your tone, your energy - everything speaks.
Coaches:
If your BP consists of 1 guy hitting and 9 guys standing in the outfield picking grass, you are failing your team.
You don't need 3-hour practices. You need 90 minutes of high reps and zero standing around.
Use stations. Keep them moving. Efficiency over everything.
@Coach_Macella@balkwhisperer So…1 out to start. Runner from third crosses home. Then batter runner abandons. There are now 2 outs. Other runners are no longer forced. You appeal to 3rd…does it matter if that runner is out? The runner from third scored before the appeal.
