Saat sang nabi mendatangi kaum Yahudi, ia mengharapkan pengakuan.

Ia mengira mereka akan menyambutnya sebagai nabi sebagaimana dalam tradisi mereka. Namun, mereka justru menolaknya dan mencapnya sebagai penipu. Kaum Kristen pun melakukan hal yang sama.

Penolakan itu merupakan pukulan pribadi, dan agama bungsu—seperti yang kita kenal sekarang—dibangun sebagai tanggapan atas penolakan tersebut.

Sang Nabi tidak pergi begitu saja; ia membalas. Ia menuangkan semangat pembalasan itu ke dalam Al-Koran. Sikap toleransi di masa awal pun sirna. Yang kemudian muncul adalah doktrin yang dibentuk oleh rasa kegetiran.

Penolakan yang ia hadapi dikemas ulang sebagai murka @allah estewe, dan penghinaan pribadi yang ia alami berubah menjadi sistem permusuhan yang permanen.

Inilah sebabnya mengapa ayat-ayat Al-Koran yang turun belakangan, sarat dengan sikap merendahkan terhadap kaum Yahudi dan Kristen. Mereka bukan sekadar lawan teologis, melainkan sebagai pihak-pihak yang telah melukai harga diri sang nabi.
