Scam Alert (Sharing for benefit of readers. Please share).

I got a phone call today (5th Feb 2024) at 10:08 AM. It was a very professional call. There was a recorded message telling me that one of my parcels has not been delivered. Press 1 to talk to customer care. Press 2 for other queries etc. It sounded super genuine.

So, I pressed 1. After a few seconds, a customer executive was speaking to me. Now, this person spoke to me (very professional, great English) telling me that he is from Fedex National Courier. He told me one of my parcels has been detained by customs. He told me that my Aadhar card, phone number has been used as the SENDER and hence they are calling me. Since I have not sent any parcel, I was a bit alarmed, but also wanted to get more details.

I asked him for further details, and he shared with me:

Parcel Sent on 2nd Feb 2024
Parcel Number - 228932129185
Origin: Mumbai
Destination: Thailand
Recipient name - Lee Kim Chiang
Parcel contents - Laptop, Credit card, bank documents, 2 kg cloth and 140 gm MDMA (Ilegal drug)
He told me that payment of ₹16500 has been made using an ICICI Debit card. Last 4 digits are 8562.

He asked me if I was the sender. I denied. I told him that I want to place on record, that I have not sent any item. He asked me if I want to lodge a complaint with the Mumbai Cyber Crime. I told him, definitely I would do that. He asked me to wait, while he transfers the call to Cyber Dept..

Suddenly, I could hear a ringtone - Transferring the call to Mumbai Cyber Crime. I waited for around 3-4 minutes, but no one picked up. The ringtone was super professional. It made me believe that the call is indeed getting transferred.

I finished my swim & on my way back, I called up Official Fedex Number to check if the Reference number was valid. They told me that, no such number exists & they do not track parcels based on phone numbers. I was still not able to believe what happened.

Now, the crazy part:

- I called the phone number back (it was a mobile number which had all facilities of automated response, keypad interactions etc) and an old lady from Kerala picked the call. She told that only her husband and herself live. She seemed to be an old lady. I spoke to her in Malayalam from two different numbers. This shows that her number was also hacked into.
- I was just wondering. What if someone had spoken to me as Mumbai Cyber Crime Team. I might have believed them and might have shared some critical details with them. Luckily, that call didn't get answered.

SUMMARY:

- Such scams exist. Since Customs/Airport/Drugs etc. are mentioned, we can easily panic and might share our details.
- Our Aadhar card details are getting shared across, and hence such scams can easily be done. Many organizations still do not accept masked Aadhar. I think Govt. has to make it mandatory to accept only Masked Aadhar.
- I got the call from a phone number with keypad interactions, automated response, call transfer etc. but the phone number was hacked. This is alarming. Technology to the highest use.
- Never share your details on call with anyone. Especially OTP etc. Check if everything is perfectly ok. Even if someone comes to your home, with such details (possible since Aadhar has address details), please never entertain such things.
- Also, never entertain if someone is transferring calls. Tell them that you would verify, and directly get in touch with Cyber Cell/Police etc.
- Also, best to have call recording option enabled for all calls by default. I have done the same now, after this call.

Now, please share this message with all. Share with your family, friends, Whatsapp. Especially senior citizens. Please tag all the authorities in the comments section, so that they are informed. If any authority wants details of the number, I can share directly.

I am planning to share this information with Cyber Crime team of my city with the phone number as well.

Share this widely. Let's defeat the impersonators together. If this can happen to me, it can happen with anyone.
