An Islamic cleric has made some serious allegations about how the Tinubu administration allegedly engages religious leaders in the North.

According to him, 12 religious leaders were selected from each northern state to promote and preach the “gospel of Tinubu.” He claimed they had five separate sittings in Abuja,Kano and jigawa and that each participant was allegedly given ₦3 million at one of the sittings

He went further to argue that the President does not genuinely value these religious leaders or the North. In his view, rather than allegedly using them to promote the government, they should be part of those advising the President on the untold hardship, economic crisis and suffering facing ordinary Nigerians, particularly in the North.

The cleric was also extremely blunt in his political assessment, saying that any Northerner who votes for Tinubu is an “idiot, a fool and a useless person.” He accused the administration of deliberately sidelining the North and described President Tinubu as deeply nepotistic, arguing that appointments, opportunities and government attention have disproportionately favoured certain interests.

Whether one agrees with his language or not, the bigger question remains: why are religious leaders being allegedly mobilised to defend a government instead of using their influence to speak truth to power on behalf of the people who are struggling?

Religious leaders should not be reduced to political cheerleaders. Their responsibility should be to speak for the people, hold leaders accountable and remind those in power of the suffering happening outside the corridors of government.
