Spotted an explanation on the debated painting which seemed plausible. It might be that the painting is of Krishna and Balaram guiding the ppl of Gokul to Vrindavan. The bearded man appears in many other Krishna paintings and is almost certainly Nanda Maharaja, Krishna's father.

@HindolSengupta @metmuseum Also, not every bearded man is muslim! I think the @SwarajyaMag article referred in the tweet doesn’t necessarily prove mughal attemps to bring communal harmony. It could very well be the attempt to include themselves in the indian history.
