2A STATE CHAMPIONS, ALL IN FOR 61. 💜🏈
What happened today in Hutchinson was bigger than a trophy. Bigger than a scoreboard. Bigger than football.
Earlier this season, Nemaha Central senior lineman Daniel Childress (#61) was diagnosed with brain cancer. He underwent brain surgery and immediately began a fight no teenager should ever face but he attacked it with the same toughness and courage he brought to every snap.
And Kansas noticed. The entire state rallied around him. Teams, towns, communities, all backing 61 in his fight.
In the semifinals, his teammates FaceTimed him from the field after punching their ticket to the title game. Today, Daniel stood on the sideline in person, watching his brothers finish the job.
From the opening kickoff, 61 was everywhere. Every player carrying him with them. Every coach knowing exactly who this was for.
When the final horn sounded and Nemaha Central won the 2025 2A State Championship over SE of Saline, 35-6, the emotions were incredible. Players sprinting to him. Coaches embracing him. A celebration that said loud and clear:
Courage matters. Fight matters. Family matters.
Daniel’s battle became this team’s heartbeat.
His strength became their standard. And today, he watched his team bring home a state title with him at the center of it all.
This is what high school sports is about.
This is more than football. This is a community and state going ALL IN FOR 61.

Nemaha Central senior lineman Daniel Childress (#61) has recently been diagnosed with brain cancer.
Childress was a key contributor in the Thunder’s first two games of the 2025 season before experiencing severe headaches, numbness, and tingling. A brain tumor was discovered just two weeks ago, and Daniel is now preparing for surgery this week with treatment to follow.

Nemaha Central’s (2A, 9-1) 5’11 195lb Linebacker has been a beast all season for the Thunder. Abram Keim was an All-State linebacker and 2A DPOTY finalist as a junior when Nemaha Central won their second 2A state championship in a row and has proven himself once again to be one of the best. Keim has 126 tackles on the season through just 10 games. Only 14 away from his season total last year through 13 games. Nemaha Central moves to 9-1 on a 9 game winning streak after a week one loss to Marysville and matches up against undefeated Osage City in Sectionals this week. #sportsinkansas

The Nemaha Central Thunder (3A🏐) earned the first ever Big East Championship last night. They finished 9-1 in league play last night after defeating Sabetha and honoring their seven seniors. The JV & Freshmen teams also swept the league. They have a total of 54 players (25 freshmen) out for volleyball! Incredible program led by Jessica Koch! They also won the last ever Big 7 league title last season before the league merger of Big 7 & Mid East League formed the brand new Big East. Great things going on in Seneca, Kansas! #sportsinkansas photo: Dari Hilbert

Sports in Kansas 2023 2A Football Coach of the Year
Michael Glatczak, Nemaha Central
Glatczak has led the Thunder to back to back state titles in 2A with a 26-game winning streak. NC beat Hoisington in the state title game 28-14 in the title game last Saturday in Salina. NC has now won three state titles since 2019. The school consolidated Nemaha Valley and Baileyville B&B in 2014 to form Nemaha Central. NC had eight shoutouts this season led by their defensive coordinator Mark Mayberry. NC also led by a talented cast of players on the offensive line with great size that wore teams down late in the game. (Pictured at last years event as he was unable to attend this years ceremony)
