Hadhramaut: A Betrayal That Still Echoes Today”

Hadhramaut, a vast and resource-rich region in today’s Yemen, was once governed by its own sultanates—the Quaiti, Kathiri, and Mahra states—recognized by Britain through treaties of protection. In September 1967, just weeks before Britain’s formal withdrawal from Aden, Hadhramaut’s rulers were betrayed. Their states were forcibly dismantled, and the region was handed over to the National Liberation Front (NLF), a faction backed from Cairo, against the will of its legitimate leadership and people.

This political maneuver was not about Hadhramaut itself, but about Cold War calculations: containing Nasser’s influence in North Yemen and obstructing Saudi Arabia’s ambitions under King Faisal toward the Arabian Sea. The consequences were devastating—loss of sovereignty, mass violence, and decades of imposed rule.

Today, more than half a century later, the same patterns of external manipulation, proxy actors, and imposed agendas re-emerge. The following is a powerful testimony written by Abdullah Bawazeer—a veteran journalist, political figure, and witness to history—who revisits that betrayal and warns of its echoes today.

اليوم نُحيي ذكرى نكبة حضرموت 1967، يومٌ اسود في تاريخنا، حين سُحلت كرامة الإنسان على أيادي الشيوعيين تحت راية “الجبهة القومية”.
أُهينت الأرواح البريئة في الشوارع، رُبط الرجال بالحبال وسُحبوا على الطرقات، وأُلقي بهم من أعالي البيوت، وقُطّعوا بالفؤوس، فقط لأنهم رفضوا الانصياع لآلة الاستبداد.

لم تكن تلك المجازر سوى محاولة لإسكات صوت حضرموت الحر، ولتكسير عمودها الاجتماعي والسياسي، ولكن التاريخ لا يرحم، والذاكرة لا تُمحى.

حضرموت، برغم الألم والدماء، ما زالت شامخة، وأبناؤها اليوم أكثر وعيًا بحقهم في الكرامة والحرية، وأقدر على قول “لا” لكل مشروع يحاول مصادرة إرادتهم.

إن استذكار تلك الأحداث ليس اجترارًا للماضي، بل هو عبرة للأجيال، حتى ندرك أن الحرية لا تُمنح، بل تُنتزع، وأن دماء من سُحلوا هي أمانة في أعناقنا لنكمل طريقهم نحو مستقبل يليق بأرض حضرموت وأهلها.

Will it be the Hadhrami Elite Forces, given their funding and formation, or stronger forces using them as a façade—at a time when Hadhrami society itself remains divided between the Hadhramaut Tribal Alliance and the Hadhramaut Inclusive Conference?

It is time to remember and to understand, not merely to mourn. Hadhramaut will only endure through the unity of its people—before it is too late.
