Another milestone was marked in the deepening India-UK defence partnership with the successful completion of professional military education programmes by Indian Military officers at two of the UK’s premier institutions. Brig Krishnan, Cmde Choudhury & Air Cmde Deshpande graduated from the Royal College of Defence Studies, while Lt Col Prateek Kumar Gupta, Lt Cdr Sangram Kshirsagar & Sqn Ldr Shaminder Singh Bassi completed the Advanced Command & Staff Course at the Joint Services Command & Staff College.

Her name is Meeran Chadha Borwankar.

A minister sat across a table from her and ordered her to hand over three acres of police land to a private bidder.

She said no.

He lost his temper and hurled the map across the glass table between them. She stood up, saluted him, and walked out.

She joined the Indian Police Service in 1981, at a time when a woman in a police uniform in India was almost a curiosity. She went on to become the first woman to head the Mumbai crime branch, and the first woman to lead the Pune police.

In 2010, soon after she took charge in Pune, she was told to complete the handover of a valuable piece of police land in the heart of the city. The land had already been auctioned off to a private bidder before her time. She was expected to simply sign it away.

She looked at it and refused. The land, she said, was needed for the police themselves, for their offices and for homes for the constables and their families, the men and women who guard the city and often cannot afford to live in it. Handing it to a builder, she said plainly, would look like the new commissioner had sold herself out.

The minister overruled her and told her the matter was closed. She told him, gently and finally, that she would not do it.

The map came flying across the table. She saluted, and left.

It cost her. The posting she wanted did not come. But she wrote to the government demanding the whole deal be cancelled, and she kept fighting until the land was returned to the police, where it belonged.

Years later, the bidder who had been due to receive that land was named as an accused in one of the biggest corruption cases in the country.

She had no way of knowing that at the time. She simply refused to hand over what was not hers to give.

It’s official! I have just got off the phone with my brother-in-law, Lt Gen Rajesh Pushkar, and I simply cannot contain my immense pride and joy.

He has just been appointed as the Army Commander of the prestigious Southern Command, effective July 1. To put this into perspective, there are only six operational commands in the entire Indian Army, and the Southern Command is by far the largest in terms of geographical coverage, spanning an enormous and strategically vital part of our nation.

Knowing his military brilliance, his stellar record, and his absolute dedication to the uniform, I have no doubt that he will lead with the highest distinction. It is a moment of profound pride for our entire family, and a reassuring moment for the nation, to see such an exceptional and dedicated officer ascend to a position of such monumental responsibility. His name is Colonel Prasad Purohit.

He joined the Indian Army in 1994 through the Officers Training Academy in Chennai. He was commissioned into the Maratha Light Infantry. He served in counter insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir from 2002 to 2005 before moving to Military Intelligence.

On September 8, 2008, a bomb blast near a mosque in Malegaon, Maharashtra, killed 31 people and injured over 300. Most victims were Muslim pilgrims gathered for Friday prayers during Ramadan.

Two months later, in November 2008, the Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad arrested Prasad Purohit. He was accused of masterminding the attack. He was stripped of his uniform and suspended from service.

He maintained throughout his imprisonment that he had infiltrated the organisation in question as part of his official Military Intelligence duties and had been reporting to his superiors.

He spent 2791 days in prison. Nearly nine years. His children grew up without him. They never visited him in jail. His wife Aparna attended court hearings alone for years. A bail petition filed in the Supreme Court in 2011 took seven years to be heard. The Supreme Court finally granted him bail on August 21, 2017.

On July 31, 2025, a Special NIA Court in Mumbai acquitted all seven accused including Purohit. The court recorded that the prosecution had failed to prove the charges beyond reasonable doubt. The allegations regarding procurement and storage of RDX could not be substantiated with credible proof. The NIA itself had stated in 2024 that the Maharashtra ATS had planted RDX to frame the accused.

He was reinstated in the Indian Army. In September 2025, he was promoted to the rank of Colonel with his original seniority restored. The Army has since cleared him for promotion to Brigadier.

His wife Aparna said after the acquittal a jail is a living crematorium. When Prasad was sent to jail, all his identities were stripped from him. The scars of 17 years will remain.

The court acquitted all accused. The Malegaon blast case is closed. The truth of what happened in Malegaon on September 8, 2008, remains officially unresolved.
