Dr. Sunshine Minenhle Myende’s
She has been appointment as executive chairperson in August 2025, Dr. Myende has faced intense scrutiny over her leadership style and spending.
In early 2026, she and her entourage reportedly spent approximately R1 million on a luxury trip to New York for UN General Assembly events, flying business class and staying at the upscale Hyatt Grand Central Hotel.
Within her first six months, the NYDA spent over R4 million on events, including a controversial R1.4 million NSFAS outreach programme in Nkandla, which opposition MPs criticised as wasteful and superficial.
In June 2026, Myende sparked major backlash after obtaining a court order to gag a Sunday Times journalist from publishing internal information. She also authorised expensive forensic audits of employees’ emails and phones widely viewed as a politically motivated witch hunt against whistleblowers who leaked spending details. Myende defended the probe as a cybersecurity measure, claiming her devices had been hacked.
