Whatโs in a Map?
The UN General Assembly has voted 164โ1 to encourage the world to stop drawing Africa as if it were the size of Greenland.
The โCorrect the Mapโ resolution, led by Togo for the African Group and backed by the African Union, urges schools, governments, international organisations and technology platforms to use equal-area projections such as Equal Earth instead of the 16th-century Mercator map. That map inflates landmasses near the poles and shrinks those near the equator. Africa is about fourteen times larger than Greenland. On the map most of us grew up with, they look almost the same size. The resolution is not binding. It does not ban Mercator for navigation. It does not redraw a border. It asks the world to stop teaching a distortion as geography.
That decision matters. And it does not.
It matters because maps are never only maps. They are instruments of worldview. They tell children who is large and who is small, who is central and who is peripheral. For centuries a European navigational tool became the default picture of the planet. When Africa is visually minimised, it is easier to treat the continent as marginal in politics, capital and history. Correcting a false image is intellectual hygiene. Dignity is not a small thing. Representation is not nothing.
But a more accurate silhouette will not industrialise Africa. It will not keep the lights on, raise yields, secure property rights, or produce the manufactured goods that move a country from poverty to prosperity. A map can change how the world sees Africa. It cannot change how African states organise themselves.
In Emerging Africa I argued that the continent was emerging, not rising โ and that the difference is not semantic. Emergence is visibility and other peopleโs narratives. Transformation is productivity, skills, governance, and a coherent worldview of who we are, where we are going, and how we intend to get there.
Development is first a state of the mind. Without that inner architecture โ values, strategy, organisation โ we keep mistaking symbols for substance.
Now that we are โbiggerโ on the wall chart, will development follow? No. Not from the map.
Did Rising Asia rise by a map? China did not become a workshop of the world because cartographers enlarged it. South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and later Vietnam did not escape poverty by winning a vote in New York. They rose by seriousness about education, industrial discipline, state capacity and a long-horizon idea of national purpose. The map followed the factories, not the other way around.
This is the recurring temptation in our political culture: emotionally satisfying symbolism that misses the real point. A corrected map can nourish pride. Pride without production is a mood, not a strategy.
Teach the true size of Africa. Let children see that this continent can contain the United States, China, India, Japan, Mexico and much of Europe and still have land to spare. That is a useful shock to the imagination.
Then ask the only question that converts size into power: what are we building on that land?
A fairer map is a beginning of perception. It is not the beginning of prosperity. The world does not owe Africa a projection. Africa owes itself a plan.

Abuja, September 1, 2026 โ Nigeria's economy continues to demonstrate resilience and accelerating growth with the second quarter of 2026 real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) expanding by 4.43 per cent year-on-year, up from 4.23 per cent in Q2 2025 and 3.89 per cent in Q1 2026.
The strong Q2 2026 outturn lifted real GDP growth for the first half of 2026 to 4.16 per cent, up from 3.68 per cent in the corresponding period of 2025, a clear signal of sustained strengthening across the economy.
Growth is also becoming more broad-based. In Q2 2026, 27 economic subsectors recorded real growth above 3.0 per cent, up from 23 subsectors in Q2 2025, showing that expansion is no longer concentrated in a handful of industries.
The productive sectors led the way. Manufacturing grew by 3.24 per cent, more than double the 1.60 per cent recorded in Q2 2025, reflecting improved industrial output. Agriculture expanded by 4.39 per cent, up from 2.82 per cent, underscoring stronger production and value-chain performance. Services, the largest driver of growth, expanded by 4.60 per cent, up from 3.94 per cent.
The relative stability and steady appreciation of the exchange rate further amplified these gains in dollar terms. The naira appreciated by more than 12 per cent between H1 2025 and H1 2026, resulting in an expansion of the economy by approximately 17 per cent in U.S. dollar terms over the period, a pace that, if sustained along with the various social programmes of the Government, will meaningfully strengthen dollar incomes, improve purchasing power and lift millions of Nigerians out of poverty.
Given this momentum, Nigeria is well positioned to consolidate its standing among Africa's largest economies and to advance toward the Government's target of a USD 1 trillion economy by 2030. The International Monetary Fund has already ranked Nigeria among the top 10 contributors to global real GDP growth in 2026, projecting the country to account for roughly 1.5 per cent of world growth this year, ahead of several advanced and emerging economies.ย
Continued macroeconomic stability, sustained growth across productive sectors, and improving investor confidence would accelerate Nigeria's progression toward becoming Africa's largest economy by 2028.
These results underscore the importance of sustaining our reforms and ensuring policy consistency as their benefits begin to reach households across the country. The Government remains focused on accelerating inclusive growth and translating these macroeconomic gains into shared prosperity for every Nigerian family.
