Bear update: After a prolonged absence in the beginning of the season, bear 32, nicknamed Chunk, is back! One of the largest bears in the area, he was observed last night at Brooks Falls.

With their sheer weight and low center of gravity, bears show remarkable stability on Brooks Falls. But as bear 409 discovered late last week, standing so close to the lip can be a risky move.
Even with all of Yellowstone’s impressive mammals, it’s always a delight to see a Yellow-bellied marmot. Even better, a Yellow-bellied marmot baby! These marmots hibernate up to 8 months and average 5 young per year. This female had two other babies scurrying around the area.
