@aychesss I could get the music off of it. Need to make sure you get the right one for your iPod. Some have a ZIF connector like the one I linked, the older ones have pins and would need a different adapter. If yours is the one in the pic then it's a 4th gen and has IDE pins.

@aychesss On something newer like an iPod touch, everything is encrypted. But not an iPod classic or any iPod with a hard drive. If you put the iPod in to disk mode it just connects to a computer like any external hard drive. Needs enough battery to power on though.

@donmah perhaps a little late but you should be able to update(not restore) from recovery mode without losing data.
