there's a certain type of love the before trilogy tugs on as viscerally as it does.
for all its delicate poignance, a soul-deep yearning.
all of which reaches me differently than it would, you, or anyone else. splashing itself on a canvas of human emotions so vast and unique, i wouldn't dare believe i could paint it all.
but what i've always failed to identify is the kind of people this story resonates most with.
who are these people? what makes them who they are to create the outcome of having their own relationship with this series?
it's fair if you ask me why i care.
i suppose it really makes no difference whatsoever.
but there's a quote in the script, so profound to me, that it's been etched in my mind for over a decade:
"if there's any kind of magic in this world... it must be in the attempt of understanding someone, sharing something."
that the essence of being human, of love, rests in the gentle facet of connection.
and i don't mean romantic connection.
i mean the connection of being understood. of feeling a sense of belonging in the shared experience, albeit isolated sometime, of being moved by something beyond ourselves.
there's this latent longing i foster - for me to be able to identify the ones i'd be able to share this little isolated connection with in a crowd of people. perhaps to never see them again. even so.
because the promise of knowing you belong in this world, even just in that ephemeral connection, is one that can't not be acted upon, right? idk.
maybe it's unreasonable, this longing.
but, really, aren't just a lot of things with love?
//PS: happy june 17 to those who celebrate
It's june 16, and i would like to reiterate that before sunrise is one of the most beautiful movies out there, because so much of love truly happens in simple conversations and something as simple as walking together and caring enough to try to understand the other person!
the way it ends is so good. showing all the places jesse and celine visited still being the exact same, but for them their lives have completely changed.
i know my soulmate is gonna be a weird nerd who makes stupid jokes but is super intelligent and randomly sings song lyrics mid conversation and dances with me mindlessly in the kitchen
turns out, reading voraciously, moving your body, loving people without keeping score, protecting your solitude, chasing nothing but your own growth, and occasionally staying out too late with people who make you laugh until it hurts is not a bad way to build a life.
