My first job in the UK 🇬🇧 was pot washing in a fancy hotel kitchen 😭🇬🇧
On one of my first shifts, I decided to impress everybody with my “hardworking Naija spirit” 😂
The pile of pots and plates they expected to last 5 hours of the shift,
Omo I finished everything in 3 hours 😇😆
I was SO proud of myself.
In my mind I was like:
“Now I can relax small… maybe drink water peacefully and observe life” 😌
So I leaned on the dishwasher machine for literally a few minutes watching the chefs cook.
Little did I know…
All the sous chefs were acting supervisors and monitoring spirits 😭
“Chi is finished pot washing.”
I didn't even see the senior chef 🧑🍳 coming. One minute I was watching a man sauté something, the next minute there was a presence beside me.😪
"Right then. Since you're done —"
What followed next, I cannot fully explain with words, but I will try.😪
I changed tissue rolls in every tissue lock on the wall. I replaced the liquid soaps hanging over all the sinks around the kitchen,
I swept a kitchen that was already clean. I emptied bins that were barely full. I dragged bin trolleys OUTSIDE and cleaned them— with my two hands.
I brought out every single cup and plate that I had just washed, dried them AGAIN, and aligned them in the boxes so very carefully 🤣
The man found me work for the remaining two hours.
Every. Single. Minute. Accounted for.⏱️
I stood there arranging cups 🫖I had already arranged, and that's when the education hit me
This is not Naija 🇳🇬. Nobody here cares that you finished early. If they are paying you for 6 hours, you will WORK for 6 hours.😩
There is no "I've finished, let me rest small."
There is no leaning on the machine with your arms folded. There is no watching the chefs cook like you're a food critic.😩
If you finish your task find another one. Clean something. Organise something. Count the spoons and fork if you have to.
JUST LOOK busy. Because the moment they catch you idle, they will not give you rest they will give you purpose.
And their version of purpose at 2pm on a Tuesday is scrubbing a bin trolley in the cold outside.
That day I learned one of the most important lessons of working in the UK:🇬🇧
Your hours belong to them. All of them. Even the quiet ones.
I never leaned on that machine again. 😅
To every immigrant reading this — especially if you just started working here . Or you intend to work here,
this is not about being lazy or not. It's just a different work culture. The sooner you understand it, the smoother your journey.
No rest at work until you clock out.
People mock what they don’t understand.
Last year, I dressed like my miracle, even made a paper boarding pass with my name on it, acted in faith, and waited on God. It was funny, and I probably looked mad because I was dressed in a winter jacket in my room, holding a travel box.
I was expecting responses from several schools, the most competitive one called me for an interview that finally got me in hours after my boyfriend sent an email affirming faith that I got into that particular school with funding. Guess what, I got into that same competitive school. Sitting down to write that email at midnight must have seemed foolish at the point.
But the same faith that looked foolish then is the same faith that brought me here today.
Because “faith without works is dead.” (James 2:26)
Sometimes, “the work” is acting like what you’re praying for is already done.
“Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1)
We forget that Abraham was called crazy until Isaac came (Romans 4:18–21).
Noah looked stupid until the rain started (Genesis 6:22).
Hannah was mocked until Samuel was born (1 Samuel 1:19–20).
The woman with the issue of blood didn’t wait for an instruction; she touched His garment and was healed (Mark 5:27–29).
So yes, I’ll do it again this year Hallelujah Challenge. I’ll dress like my miracle because I’ve seen what faith can do when it’s backed by preparation and belief.
And before you call it delusion, remember: “Blessed is she who believed that the Lord would fulfil His promises to her.” (Luke 1:45)
Faith doesn’t always look logical, but it’s never wasted. You can’t mock what you’ve never tried to understand.
And for those who say they can’t take Christianity seriously, maybe it’s not because faith is unserious. Maybe it’s because they’ve never seen the power of belief beyond logic.
That’s fine.
Some of us have seen it, and once you’ve tasted and seen that the Lord is good (Psalm 34:8),
You stop explaining faith, you start living it.
This word keeps coming to me for July. Like never before, this new month and second half, may we experience the wonder working power of God’s MERCY in Jesus’ name. Happy New Month Saints.
”For He says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whomever I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I will have compassion.” So then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy.“
Romans 9:15-16 NKJV
”The Lord will perfect that which concerns me; Your mercy, O Lord, endures forever; Do not forsake the works of Your hands.“
Psalms 138:8 NKJV
”O Lord, I have heard Your speech and was afraid; O Lord, revive Your work in the midst of the years! In the midst of the years make it known; In wrath remember mercy.“
Habakkuk 3:2 NKJV
”O Lord, I have heard the report of You and was afraid. O Lord, revive Your work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make [Yourself] known! In wrath [earnestly] remember love, pity, and mercy.“
Habakkuk 3:2 AMPC
