A Test of True Character

“In this regard, the Promised Messiah (as) states:

‘There is another thing also by means of which the truthful ones can be tested, and which God Almighty Himself brings into existence. Namely, that sometimes a man is involved in such a calamity from which no way of escape or success can be seen by him except that he should tell a lie.

It is at such a time that he is tested as to whether there is truth or falsehood in his nature… whether at such a delicate time his tongue utters the word of truth or whether, fearing for his life, honour, and wealth, he starts uttering falsehood.’”

Many Murabbis are knowledgeable and are able to silence opponents in debates; however, you must also demonstrate excellent character, speak kindly, and never use harsh words. You must uphold the highest moral standards at all times.

Emphasis on Tahajjud, Nawafil Prayers, and Consistency in Worship

In the same way, as I mentioned before, the Tahajjud prayer is very important. A missionary who depends entirely upon God Almighty for his success, and has no personal effort, has a much greater need to focus on prayers. He has a much greater need to focus on Nawafil prayers as well. Therefore, everyone should make a special effort to perform Nawafil and Tahajjud prayers,
and if possible, try to perform Nawafil prayers with great effort. Similarly, I drew attention to sending salutations upon the Holy Prophet (sa) and praying. However, I have seen that most do not do this regularly. Those who are currently in the practical field also do not show regularity, and you, who are students of Jamia, also do not show regularity. Sitting here now, make a pledge that you will pay special attention to sending salutations upon the Holy Prophet (sa) regularly and will adopt consistency in this.

Entering the Field with Purpose and Devotion

“'Alhamdulillah' (All praise belongs to Allah). Today, having completed your seven-year education from Jamia, you are ready to enter the practical field. From the Jamias of the UK, Germany, Canada, Indonesia, and Ghana, you are entering the practical field with the mindset that we must carry out the tasks of moral training as well as the tasks of propagation.

You are entering the practical field with the mindset that we are life devotees and are ready to serve the Jamaat twenty-four hours a day. If this is not your mindset, then you cannot become that beneficial asset for the progress of the Jamaat that the Jamaat expects of you, that the Khalifa of the time expects of you, and for which you have made a pledge. That pledge which you have made with God Almighty.

Thus, today you are entering the practical field carrying a very important responsibility, and so you should. If this mindset, this resolve, and the spirit of sacrifice with all your capabilities for this cause are not present, then your entering the practical field holds no significance.”

Truth Above All — Even at a Loss

“On one occasion, Muhammad Hussain Batalvi Sahib wrote a letter to the Promised Messiah (as), in which he described him as an opponent of Islam, a disbeliever, and a liar, God forbid. In response, the Promised Messiah (as) wrote a detailed reply, stating that:

‘If you cast a glance upon my life with the mindset of a seeker after truth, you will find conclusive evidence that Almighty God has always safeguarded me from the filth of falsehood to the point that sometimes in the British courts my life and honour were subjected to such perilous risk, no lawyer gave me any advice except lying. But Allah, glorified by His eminence, granted me the ability to disregard my life and honour for the sake of truth.

I often suffered hefty losses in pecuniary suits merely for the sake of truth. And many a time, I deposed against the interests of my father and brother, simply out of the fear of Almighty God, but I did not abandon the truth.’”

Emphasis on Righteousness and the Acceptance of Prayer

“And also remember that for the acceptance of prayer, it is necessary for a person to tread the path of righteousness. You have read the incidents of the past elders in Jamia. You have also read the incidents of the past saints of Allah. You have also read the incidents of the acceptance of prayer of the Promised Messiah (as). You have also read incidents in the ‘Ahadith’. You must have also heard them in the sermons I am delivering these days. And you must have also read them in the Holy Quran. After all, you have graduated from Jamia having read all of this. However, the benefit of reading and listening to these incidents is only when you yourselves also attain those standards of righteousness where a direct relationship is established between you and God Almighty. And then you yourselves also become those who witness the spectacles of the acceptance of prayer. Every missionary should strive in this regard.”

Excellent Morals, Knowledge, and Courage in Propagation

“Then, also remember that if your morals are excellent, your academic standard is high, then you do not need to fear any opponent. Rather, a courage and bravery will be born within you from this. We have many missionaries whose academic standard is also good, and by debating with opponents, they silence them. But remember in the field of propagation as well that in addition to lofty arguments, tenderness and excellent morals are also essential, and this should be manifested, and then you should converse with arguments.
This is the command of the Holy Quran. This is the command of the Holy Prophet (sa). This is what the Promised Messiah (as) has taught us; that words should never utter from our mouths that in any way exhibit harshness. For this indicates a lack of courage and a lack of knowledge. Therefore, the standard of excellent morals must be the highest quality of every Murabbi.”

Beyond Words: Living What You Write

“At various times during previous convocations, I have seen that you take out your diaries and are writing. Today as well, you must be taking notes in your diary. But what is the use of this writing if this writing is to remain closed within the diaries? And if they are not acted upon throughout your life with the same zeal and enthusiasm that you are exhibiting while writing at this moment. And the passion that must have been awakened within you at this moment.

Over the past 15 to 20 years, since Jamias have started in various countries, if spectacles of working with passion and devotion had been witnessed, then a clear change should have been visible to us everywhere. But there are very few who possess this passion.

Thus, today I also say this to you, and on this occasion, I say to the Murabbiyan who are in the practical field as well, that you should constantly assess yourselves. That the great objective for which you have presented yourselves, have you utilised all your capabilities to achieve it? If not, then this is a matter of concern. If you have, then ‘Alhamdulillah’, try to improve it further.”

Guarding the Prayer: A Core Responsibility

“In the same way, attention should be given to prayers. As I have mentioned previously, it is the duty of every missionary to offer the five daily prayers on time. And in the centre to which he is appointed, or the mosque in which he is leading prayers, the doors of the mosque must be open for the five daily prayers. And the Murabbi must be present there to offer the Azan.

The missionaries who work in offices, particularly here in the central offices, and this may be the case in other countries too, those who work in offices and their offices are behind the mosque, they assume that office work is more important, therefore we should read our prayers in the office. If congregational prayers are being held, they will read behind an Imam in the office. However, this is an incorrect mindset.

Therefore, those who sit in offices here should also go and pray in the mosque instead of remaining in the office. They should not see that so-and-so is sitting in the office listening to the Khutbah, so we should also sit in the office. Even during Friday prayers, I sometimes receive complaints that here in the central offices, those whose duty is in the offices do not go to the mosque during Friday prayers. For Friday prayers, one must definitely go to the mosque. This is a very important matter.”

Emphasis on Istighfar and Regular Recitation of the Holy Quran

“Similarly, I had spoken about ‘Istighfar’. Regularity must be adopted in this as well. God Almighty should also be praised. Only when these things are created within you will you be able to convey them further to the members of the Jamaat and develop them within them. Take special care of these matters.
Then, there is the study of the Holy Quran, to which a great deal of attention needs to be given. The attention that should have been given, neither did you give during your student days—undoubtedly good reports have been presented—nor do many missionaries who are currently in the practical field pay this attention. But now, you must make a pledge that you will recite the Holy Quran daily. For a Murabbi, reading one or half a ‘Ruku’ is no great achievement. At least half or three-quarters of a Part must definitely be read. And if not a whole Part, then close to a Part should be read. And then, its meanings must be pondered over. Its commentary should be read. Only then will you be able to delve into its depths and discover the commandments which God Almighty has given us in the Holy Quran. And when you keep this guiding book before you, only then will you truly become aware of the teachings of Islam.
Only then will you be able to properly guide the people. And only then will you be able to fulfil the due right of propagation.”
