Hi! This post is a special letter for @tobyfox, a tribute made with the help of fans to celebrate Undertale's 10th anniversary.
I thank everyone who was able to help, I hope you have fun with what we made! Read the thread below too!
#undertale10thanniversary#UNDERTALE10周年
Ten years ago, a small indie game changed the way I see the world. In 2015 I was having another ordinary day at school when some old friends started talking about this “amazing” game that supposedly had multiple endings depending on how you interacted with the characters in its world. At first I ignored it, but after so much insistence I decided to give it a try, and it was definitely one of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had.
What seemed simple, the minimalist graphics and style, turned into a kind of comfort and warmth I’d never felt before, like being at your grandma’s house eating cookies. Undertale made me feel like I’d actually made new friends.
It’s been a long journey over these ten years. I never had many friends in real life to share this experience with. Whenever they saw one of my drawings, they’d ask things like, “why do you only draw that chubby skeleton?” or “what’s so special about it?” That’s when I started interacting more and more with other fans online. I spent all these years following the wide variety of content the community produced, always left wanting more.
In 2022, after watching so much community work, I felt I needed to leave my own mark. Undertale always taught us that if we’re kind enough and help those who need it, even in small ways, we can accomplish big, unimaginable things. Inspired by that, I gathered a group of creators, content creators, artists, spriters, composers, singers, voice actors, and many other talents, so they could express themselves together for the community. And what an amazing experience it was!
I met so many people, made so many friends, and shared special moments with my team that I wouldn’t trade for anything. I was able to contribute to many projects and grow as an artist.
I can honestly say, Toby: the community you built is the most united I’ve ever seen. A simple “let’s honor Undertale” convinced so many people to help willingly. I couldn’t end this letter any better, so I gathered some important fans from the community to share a few words with you as well:
@Shayy_TV (Shayy):
“Thank you so much for creating a piece of art that completely changed my life for the better. It truly means everything to me and Undertale has been such a wonderful part of my life and I wouldn't have it any other way. Thank you so much, Toby. For everything.”
@CiblesGD (Cibles):
"UNDERTALE is a game that means a lot to me. Describing it all in just a few paragraphs would be hard, I feel like I could go on and on forever. Whatever the case, I’ll try my hardest to paraphrase.
I originally found UNDERTALE through a livestream by a creator who is no longer with us. I had no idea when I watched that initial stream, that my life would be changed forever. I became so hyperfixated with the game for a long time. I would watch all the Game Theory videos, listen to the soundtrack in the car, I was so fascinated by this world that Toby Fox had created. I would watch and consume so many things about the game, I had to know each and every ending, every choice, every easter egg.
I think though, that UNDERTALE at some point became so much more of a hyperfixation. Growing up in my late teens, I wanted to be a YouTuber. I had a massive anxiety disorder, and I fully believed that I had no future. I had so much self doubt in High School. I never thought that I would get a job, or even go to College. I had a suicide plan all layed out after my last day of school because I believed that I simply had no future.
By the time I was 16, I went all in on YouTube as I believed that due to my disorder, it was the only thing that could allow me to have a future. Throughout High School, I created Nintendo content non stop because I thought this was the only opportunity for me.
That was until my UNDERTALE fixation came back.
I made one video. Just one. I somehow hit 1k views overnight. I realized then, “I can do this.” My senior year of High School was just going all in on UNDERTALE and creating some content on the game. Even if it didn’t amount to much, it was still miles better than my Nintendo content was making.
And so when that last day came of High School… I decided… that’s when I had a future. UNDERTALE… gave me a future. It gave me hope. It made me believe in my dreams.
That summer, I went all in. By the end of it, I had my first video that would sit at over 200k views. I was then able to repeat that video’s success over and over. I would record, edit, upload, all day everyday. I have given myself a full time job.
Fast forward 2 years, I make a video called “Undertale, but it’s Desert Bus” and in that video I made a contest, saying that “hey if anyone beats this I’ll give you 100 dollars”. It was a tight contest, but we did have a winner. I gave her the money and I thought that would be the end of it.
However, after she won, we kept talking. We became best friends. We would talk 24/7, we would call all the time. We would laugh, vent, eat, cry, smile, play games, and watch shows together. We became inseparable. I even flew her out to see me.
Soon after, we became closer than best friends. We started dating. I had my first kiss, I was intimate for the first time, we loved each other more than we could ever know. To this day, we’re still close, we still talk and do stuff together everyday. Hell, we’re even trying to move in with each other.
And to think… I even met her in the first place because we both played UNDERTALE.
Through Toby’s game, not only did me and my girlfriend meet, not only did I get a job, but I provided a job for other people as well to help me with my videos. I’ve hired video editors, thumbnail artists, sprite artists, hell even my girlfriend works for me.
I formed a separate team of sprite artists, programmers, music artists, and translators together to make a fan project called “Undertale Plus”. Millions of people have seen the reveal trailer now. So many passionate people have helped make a project that millions of people have seen. Their work has been seen by millions.
Speaking of fan projects, there’s so many Undertale fangames, that I decided that I would attempt to play almost all of them. I made a marathon stream and raised thousands of dollars towards charity. Just playing Undertale fangames. So many people donated. It was unreal.
So…. just thank you Toby Fox. For making a wonderful game. By creating it, you impacted my life more than anything else ever has. I don’t know where I would be right now if it weren’t for your game. I look forward to everything you do in the future."
@pex_ton (Penkaru):
"Undertale is… wow man I don’t even know where to begin with this. Throughout my life I’ve had many moments with gaming where I want to hold onto the memories and pass it on to others and potentially my kids when I’m much older, and undertale is THE example of that. It's crazy to think that 10 years ago I was getting scared over flowey and dressing up as sans for halloween 6 years in a row after seeing him.
Undertale is one of those games where when you finally complete it, you feel a sense of accomplishment and that your view on things, even life, has changed drastically. This game means more than simple text on a screen, it's a part of who I am, and why I’m here today. It's helped me get through some of the worst moments of my life. I’ve dealt with loss, bullying, and many many low points coming and going in my life, and every time I had this silly game to help me remember that, despite everything, it’s still you.
Undertale shows us that no matter what happens, you can be the change you want to see. That you can do anything you wish to do with enough hopes and dreams. Without Undertale, I’m not sure if I would even be here today. It inspired me to learn and try new things, and above all was a part of why I became a youtuber. Everything from Undertale feels like theirs with so much weight and meaning to it, and that's a big part of why many people, myself included, fell in love with it. From the characters, to the art, to the story, to the soundtrack, there’s almost nothing BAD about this game, it was made with so much care and passion that it’s a timeless classic, and will continue to be one for as long as it is around.
One of my first ever videos(currently private), is me fighting sans on the online bad time simulator website before I had to go to soccer practice. My name on my channel USED to be “punmaster” for my love of sans and undertale as a whole, and over time I’d change it more and more until I was met with the name “penkaru”, and the rest is history. Undertale has shaped my life to what it is today, and the fact that 10 years later, I’m now viewed by potentially another kid who was just like me, but with deltarune instead means more than words can ever explain. If you’re ever going through something, please take care of yourself, and remember that someone out there really cares about you.
Thank you Toby, Temmie, and the entire Undertale/Deltarune fandom for allowing me to live the best life I could have ever asked for. One with good memories, one with good friends, one with my dreams becoming true day by day, one where I can help inspire and make other people’s days easier, and one filled with DETERMINATION. Happy 10 year anniversary to the greatest game I’ve ever played, I cannot wait for the day to come where I can experience this with my future kids and see more “punmasters” bloom in the penkaru bloodline."
@Spaceman_Scott (Spaceman Scott):
I was 16 when UNDERTALE came out. As a pimple-faced social outcast in high-school, UNDERTALE hit me like a nuke. It was just about everything I could have ever hoped for in a game. A quirky, subversive RPG that not only boasted a vast fandom of like-minded losers, but a story that captured my teenage mind by the short hairs and has never let go.
I remember getting into debates with my friends at lunch about arbitrary powerscaling and who could beat who in any number of hypothetical matches. More than a few abandoned Tumblr accounts litter the internet, their roleplaying contents now lost to me like a digital library of Alexandria. Late night Skype calls (yes, it was that long ago) asking about a certain mystery man that may or may not exist are all that remain of my first playthrough. But my most cherished memory from UNDERTALE isn’t from any specific gag or moment, but was instead from an outside actor: my friend Teddy.
Teddy was the one who got UNDERTALE for me through, what I’m sure were completely legal means, insisting that I play through the game that he’d been info-dumping about for the better part of a month now. I was admittedly hesitant at the time, with my video game bread and butter long being made up of shooters or puzzle games - UNDERTALE was something entirely foreign to me, a gateway into a kind of narrative and genre that I’d never opened myself up to before. But hesitancy aside, I played it, with Teddy watching me the whole time. My first playthrough of UNDERTALE was so special, because I wasn’t really playing it alone. All the memorable scenes, battles, and gags were made all the more impactful as, while I experienced them for the first time, Teddy got to experience them in a new perspective: as someone getting to share this gem of a game with someone else.
Teddy watched me play all of UNDERTALE, with more than a few late night gaming sessions threatening to further disrupt both of our pitiable sleep schedules even worse than high school life had done. But I was obsessed, enraptured in seeing what came next, in who I might meet beyond the next area, and of course, to see where this whole thing was going. Like most players, I got some version of the neutral ending on my first completion of UNDERTALE. I remember not even paying attention to the ending phone call, as the only thing on my mind was how “this isn’t the best ending, I’m not done yet.”
Teddy helped me complete my first ever true pacifist run, careful to provide guidance wherever necessary, but never to backseat game. Whether I knew it or not, Teddy had a lot of power at that moment, he could have sabotaged the run at any time, or fed me misinformation, but he didn’t, instead acting as something of a gentle guide from one horrifying underground lab to another fishy dating scene. However, Teddy did tell me one lie about the true pacifist run, a bit of misinformation that, to this day, I’m thankful for falling for. Teddy told me that, during the fight with Asriel, God of Hyperdeath, that if I died even ONCE then the game would reset, deleting all of my files and forcing me to start from the very beginning. This was, naturally, horrifying to me. At the time I wasn’t aware of the possibility of downloading existing save files online, so this threat was very real, and very intimidating. And, as many had during the fight against the Dreemur’s prodigal son, I lost.
My heart dropped as I saw the one on screen snap in half. “That’s it, then” I mumbled dejectedly. “I have to play the whole game again.” Teddy was silent, but I could hear his smile, practically seeing it in my mind’s eye. A moment later, I understood. “But it refused.” read the screen, and I LOST IT. I was overwhelmed with joy, relief, and, if you’ll forgive the corniness, determination to see this ending through. Truthfully, I couldn’t imagine playing through UNDERTALE without having Teddy with me, nor could I imagine the ending of the true pacifist run without their little white lie in the fore-front of my mind. In the years since, I’ve found myself in Teddy’s shoes more than a few times, taking on the role of a gently guiding hand as all number of friends, partners, and acquaintances played through one of the most important games of my life. I even made sure to keep the lie alive, telling more than a few intrepid players that should they lose in the final boss fight, that they would need to play the entire game all over again. It’s an experience that’s never gotten old, and one that I have my old friend to thank for. To me, UNDERTALE is the culmination of someone’s hard work, love, and passion, manifested in a 6-8 hour quirky RPG. UNDERTALE is the game that made me want to get further into story telling, into writing in general. UNDERTALE is the link to a part of my life, and to a friend, that I’ve been removed from for a long long time now.
To me, UNDERTALE was the avenue to learn just how exciting it can be to play a game for the first time, but also the even more personal euphoria that goes along with being able to share that with someone else. Today, I look back at my hyperfixation for Toby’s humble little indie project and, truth be told, I don’t find myself cringing or regretting a second of it. I simply feel thankful. Thankful to Teddy, for convincing me to give the game a try, and for making my experience truly unforgettable. Thankful to Toby for creating the game, despite his concerns and anxieties leading up to it. I sometimes wonder how surreal it must be for him, to know that the characters he’s been sitting on, developing, and hyperfixating on for so long have taken on a life of their own. How does it feel to know your characters have been lovingly drawn, animated, voice acted, role-played, etc for ten whole years now? How does it feel to know that with DELTARUNE, that fan engagement will only continue? I imagine it’s overwhelming. I also imagine that it’s a dream come true.
Thank you, Toby. For creating UNDERTALE, for sharing your world and characters with us. For giving I, and so may others, the opportunity to allow this short little work of fiction to change and influence us into the people we are today. Though you may still be working towards making the fever dream of yours a reality, I hope you can pause for a moment and know that in your pursuit to do so, you’ve made so many others dreams come true as well.
@NyriaTamare (Nyria):
“I like Undertale cause of Sans. Mainly, due to his mysterious ties to how he knew about the 'timelines' during certain routes of the game. It gives the game a more in depth perspective on how we 'the player' view the world.”
@Bub8les (Bub8les):
"It's crazy to think this game is 10 years old. It certainly doesn't feel like 10 years. I likely wouldn't be the person I am if it weren't for Undertale. Your community has given so much to me just because of the silly lyrical songs I've done over the last 4 years. Funny how this hobby I thought I'd end up not pursuing ends up having the biggest impact on my life. I wanna thank you Toby Fox for this amazing game and these amazing characters. Here's to many more years!"
@Wicherbitcher (Ester "Wicher" Timely):
"Hello mr. Fox,
How are you? I know this is just a message but I don't think you get that asked that, very much in these, haha!
I think if it wasn't for you and everything you've created within UNDERTALE and DELTARUNE, and even things past them like your other work, I wouldn't be the same person I am today. I know you probably heard that a million times by now, but I think that's a really good achievement to have. I remember before the release of "UNDERTALE", you were scared of it getting popular and I understand why.
It's a monkey's paw deal almost I think... There are a lot of good things that come with popularity but a lot of the bad, and let's be real the UNDERTALE Fandom had to grow out of the bad. I'm not saying it's not there anymore, but it's just been made smaller. And DELTARUNE's fandom is doing better in all honesty... Probably because everyone grew up, lol.
Thanks to you my life has been different, I think your games made me look much more into game dev, composing and just writing in general... I hope you sleep well every night and your pillow is cold knowing so many kids and teens grew up with UNDERTALE and with it gained many fantastic talents due to their curiosity...
I hope you're feeling well."
@goinks_ (Goinks):
“It's hard to believe that it's been ten years since Undertale came into my life, and it's even crazier that it's never left. It's been a consistent part of my life every day and I'm eternally grateful for that. Through it I've made friends, done extraordinary things, and have lived a much happier life since ive found this game. thank you undertale, and thank you toby for such a wonderful game that touched my heart, as well as so many others.”
@nIk2656 (Nickolas Mendoza):
“UNDERTALE is not just a game to me. It defined and shaped me into someone I didn't know I had in me. It made me discover more about myself and who I am and what I am capable of. UNDERTALE is about the journey it takes you through, not only in the game but for you. For that, I thank you, Toby Fox. Thank you for the best 10 years of this journey. And thank you helping me find myself and what I'm capable of.”
@Delphine_Ariel (Delphine Ariel):
"Undertale has allowed me to meet people I deeply care about while changing my life for the better. I wouldn't be the same if this game didn't exist. It's a game I deeply love and admire for it's innovation and charming characters. Toby managed to make me and many other people care for videogame characters for the first time in our lives."
@FazzyFazPants (FAZZY):
“Undertale means more to me than I can really put into words. It was the spark that first pulled me into music, and through that, it helped me grow an online presence I never thought I’d have. Because of this game, I’ve made amazing friends, and I even discovered my dream which is to one day become a professional musician.
It also taught me lessons that stuck, about choices, about morality, about how the things we do can really affect others, for better or worse. Those themes hit me so deeply that I even carry part of Undertale with me forever in the form of a tattoo on my hand.
Ten years later, it’s wild to think how much a single game has shaped who I am today.”
@xsunrayzz (Nickxyz)
“Dear Toby Fox,
Happy 10th Anniversary to Undertale!
I just want to say thank you, for creating something so unique, heartfelt, and inspiring. Undertale isn’t just a game. It’s an experience that redefined how we view storytelling, morality, and player choice. You showed us that kindness can be powerful, that humor and heart can coexist, and that every action, big or small, matters. Undertale, with its unforgettable and cool characters, with its beautiful music, and surprising emotional depth, continues to inspire me and a bunch of more people.
Ten years later, the influence of your game still continues, not just in the industry, but in the hearts of people like me. Thank you for everything you poured into this game.
With sincere gratitude,
Nickxyz”
@yuneelyn (Yuné):
“Undertale has been a grand part of my life and forever a grand success. The storytelling that makes you tear up, the artwork that makes you gasp in awe, the unforgettable gameplay… and the felt through soundtrack that would make even the toughest of them all cry. Undertale made me realize just how much I matter and that I truly am free, that I can be anyone if I’m just determined enough.
Thank you, Toby Fox.”
@Realizer_367 (TheRealizer367):
"I can't express with enough words just how much Undertale has affected my life. It was the thing that allowed me to interact with people, it let other people's emotions reach me and express my own. If I were to picture it, I'd imagine it to be a very warm and calm place. I'm proud to have found my place in it's community, and even more proud of the person it lead me to be. It gave me memories I could never replace. Thank you, Toby. Here's to another 10 Years of fun!"
@j0kerzz_ (J0kerzz):
“Undertale turns 10 in 2025. Wow, it feels like it was just yesterday, right?
It was a game I watched with no real intentions, completely outside the kind of genre I usually enjoy. And yet, I fell in love with it.
I wanted to make a video because, at the time, I couldn’t find any content in Portuguese. I made my very first theory without any big plans. The rest is history.
So many amazing memories over all these years, especially following the releases of Deltarune.
Without a doubt, it was one of the games that left the biggest mark on my life. It was the game that made a dream come true, having an impact on YouTube by making cool content, reaching the 100k plaque, and meeting incredible people along the way.
I’m truly grateful for all the love and recognition.
Thank you, Toby Fox, for creating this masterpiece.”
@WDPiter (WD Piter):
“Undertale… For me, this was without a doubt the most important game of my entire life. No matter how many works I come across, no matter how much time passes, I will always see Undertale as something special, as the game that was not only an incredible experience for me but also the one that changed the entire path I chose to follow in life. So many people I met, so many moments I shared, all because of this game, and not just the game itself but also the entire community that came together around it.
The AUs, theories, debates, moments… all of it was absolutely magical, special, and irreplaceable. It’s not just the game that’s beautiful but everything it brought along with it. Even after so much time, even after I’ve stepped away from Undertale and the community, it will always be something special to me, an indispensable part of my life. And nothing will ever change that."
