The point is that Perez Hilton isn’t some innocent bystander who randomly became the target of internet cruelty because people are pointing out the irony of all this. He built an empire by humiliating other people. He outed closeted celebrities knowing it could destroy their careers, published leaked nudes, sexualized underage celebrities, mocked Britney Spears during a very public mental health crisis, and even sold shirts asking why Heath Ledger died instead of her.

You’re free to have sympathy for someone struggling with mental health. That doesn’t require rewriting history or pretending his victims never existed.

Personally I don’t feel much sympathy for someone who made a career out of violating other people’s dignity and privacy, including posting sexualized images of minors and leaked intimate photos. If you think that’s someone who deserves unwavering public sympathy, I hope you’re equally passionate about every man that shares a woman’s leaked nudes or exploits underage girls for clicks and then claims to be sorry and changed and suffers a mental health crisis. Otherwise, your outrage seems awfully selective.

And the irony? The people who spent years insisting the internet never forgets are suddenly demanding everyone forget his past because the consequences finally caught up with him.
