Cambodia's Press Crackdown: Where's the Government Outrage?

Government officials and pro-government commentators have spent days attacking the WSJ over its scam compound coverage, framing it as an assault on Cambodia's reputation. Meanwhile CamboJA's 2025 report came out, and the silence from those same voices is total.

61 documented violations against journalists. Legal cases up 61% from 2024. Five media licenses revoked. State actors responsible for 51 of the 61 cases. Cambodia dropped from 151st to 161st in the World Press Freedom Index.

Stung Treng environmental journalist Uk Mao is facing 22 separate lawsuits, 17 of them filed by just two plaintiffs. A Japanese journalist who photographed the Bavet Business Center was pulled inside by Chinese staff, surrounded by around 10 men, and interrogated before being told to leave Cambodia for his safety. Mongabay's Gerald Flynn was banned from re-entering in January after a France 24 documentary the government called "fake news."

Defending Cambodia's image is apparently urgent when foreign media reports on it. Defending the 57 journalists targeted in 2025, doing the same work in Khmer from inside the country, gets nothing.

ตีนซา ชุนเล ยี (Thinzar Shunlei Yi) ผู้อำนวยการ Sisters2Sisters องค์กรสตรีที่สนับสนุนทหารของกองกำลังต่อต้านรัฐบาลทหารเมียนมาเปิดเผยว่า มาตรการดังกล่าวเริ่มต้นใช้อย่างจริงจังในช่วงต้นปีที่ผ่านมา และคาดว่าจะขยายออกไปอีกในหลายพื้นที่ทั่วประเทศ

เมเรดิธ บันน์ (Meredith Bunn) ผู้ก่อตั้งองค์กรการกุศลเพื่อความช่วยเหลือทางการแพทย์ (Skills for Humanity: SFH) ระบุว่า ก��รห้ามนำเข้าผ้าอนามัยเป็นความคิดของ ‘พวกโง่เขลา’ และ ‘ไร้การศึกษา’ รวมถึงเป็นแนวคิดเกลียดชังเพศหญิงภายในกองทัพ

แม้จะยังไม่มีแถลงการณ์ประเด็น��ังกล่าวอย่างเป็นทางการจากรัฐบาลเมียนมา อย่างไรก็ตาม การขนส่งผ้าอนามัยในบางพื้นที่ เช่น จากเมืองสะกายไปยังเมืองมัณฑะเลย์เป็นสิ่งต้องห้าม และไม่เคยเกิดขึ้นนับตั้งแต่กองทัพเมียนมาทำการรัฐประหารรัฐบาลพลเรือนเมื่อปี 2021

นักกิจกรรมด้านสตรีรายดังกล่าวชี้ว่า กลยุทธ์ดังกล่าว เป็นเจตนาของรัฐบาลทหารเมียนมาที่ต้องการจำกัดกิจกรรมทางการเมืองของพลเรือนสตรีในเมียนมา พร้อมทั้งสร้างความทรมานทั้งทางกายและจิตใจให้กับสตรีที่อาศัยอยู่ในค่ายผู้พลัดถิ่น ซึ่งมีคนอาศัยอยู่รวมกันมากกว่า 3.5 ล้านคน

นอกจากนี้ ข้อมูลจากองค์กร Sisters2Sisters ยังระบุว่า การขาดแคลนผ้าอนามัยยังนำไปสู่การซื้อขายผ้าอนามัยในตลาดมืด ราคาสูงถึง 9,000 จ๊าด (ประมาณ 137.55 บาท) จากเดิม 3,000 จ๊าด (ประมาณ 45.85 บาท) ซึ่งราคาเพิ่มขึ้นถึง 3 เท่า ขณะที่ค่าแรงขั้นต่ำของประชาชนชาวเมียนมาอยู่ที่ 7,800 จ๊าด (ประมาณ 119.21 บาท)

ทั้งนี้ องค์กร Sisters2Sisters ได้เรียกร้องไปยังองค์การสหประชาชาติ (United Nations: UN) สำหรับประเด็นดังกล่าวที���เกิดขึ้นในเมียนมา โดยระบุว่า การจำกัดการซื้อขายสินค้าดังกล่าว ถือเป็นการละเมิดสิทธิมนุษยชนขั้นพื้นฐาน
