Kim Jiwon shares her thoughts in a new interview with Allure Korea.

“Q: We’re meeting quite late today. You’re currently filming your next SBS drama, Doctor X: The Era of the White Mafia, right?

Jiwon:
That’s right. I think we’re about two-thirds of the way through filming now. We’ve been working hard and filming passionately. At the same time, I do feel a bit nervous.

Q: Is this your first time wearing a doctor’s white coat?

JW: I played a military doctor in Descendants of the Sun, but this is the first time I’ve worn a white coat and portrayed a doctor who actually practices medicine in earnest. It required much more studying than I expected. The director, medical advisors, and many professionals have been incredibly passionate in helping us, so I felt I couldn’t approach it carelessly either.

Q: In the teaser, your character Gye Soo-jung is described as both a genius surgeon and a “lone wolf.” What does that mean?

JW: I think “lone wolf” describes her perfectly. She’s someone who really makes you reflect on the meaning of the word “steadfast.” Her sense of duty as a doctor is remarkable, and every decision and action she makes is admirable. Rather than simply thinking, “She’s cool,” she’s the kind of person you find yourself wanting to support more and more as you continue watching her.

Q: Does she move forward fearlessly, like the saying “a rhinoceros charging ahead”?

JW: Exactly. While playing her, I found myself learning from her too. She made me realize, “So someone really could make this kind of decision in a situation like this,” or “You can choose to act this way.” I wanted to learn that attitude and courage.

Q: That reminds me of another kind of strength. Yoon Myung-joo from Descendants of the Sun, Tanya from Arthdal Chronicles, Yeom Mi-jeong from My Liberation Notes, and Hong Hae-in from Queen of Tears all seem emotionally reserved on the outside, yet possess deep love and courage.

JW: They’re all wonderful characters. Every time I portray someone like them, I’m amazed by the writers who created them. I often wonder how someone can write characters that teach the actor playing them so much. Every role becomes an opportunity for me to grow alongside the character.”
