The 83-year-old had lived beside Spirit Lake for more than 50 years and ignored repeated evacuation orders as the volcano showed clear signs it was about to erupt.

When Mount St. Helens exploded on 18 May 1980, Truman, his lodge, and his 16 cats were buried beneath an estimated 150 feet of volcanic debris, and none of their remains were ever recovered.
