News from Iran via satellite phone:

- Last night, police and anti-riot units were not observed on the streets.
Instead, plainclothes officers or forces on motorcycles, carrying handguns, were seen shooting at people, possibly with plastic bullets or paintball-type canisters, which appeared to be non-fatal.

- There were also some thugs armed with machetes and knives among the crowds, supporting the government and trying to intimidate people into going home. According to my source, this did not go beyond intimidation and was largely ignored by protesters.

- The plainclothes officers also used lasers to threaten people on rooftops, ordering them to go home or face being shot.
