I think the long gaps between seasons of shows are a huge part of how insane fandom has become. people get SO invested, and have years to tell themselves what the show is. their opinions about characters calcify until any evolution is seen as the writers making a mistake.

Wednesday has a really huge guilty complex and belief SHE needs to fix her mistakes. SHE DID NOT decide to use her friends as bait, they decided to do it BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO HELP. Even if she still had feelings for him, it's overrridden by her desire to protect others.
