Hi #Newsnight
I’ll tell you why I, aged 63, am ‘not working’: I am caring for my 95 year old mother.
So so many people I know are either in the same boat or caring for grandchildren.
Without affordable childcare and social care this will not change.
Also important: National Insurance cut more progressive & better for growth than Income Tax cut. But "80% of the benefit of the [Autumn Statement] NI cut will go to top half of the population." Not progressive, doesn't tackle the hunger & debt we're seeing https://t.co/8RezBpTbg2
Today we remember the #Moorgate tube disaster. Our thoughts are with all those who lost their lives and those who live on with the impact of what happened. https://t.co/RwD1xnJ8l0
In partnership with @ubeleinitiative we're delighted to introduce the recipients of the Jane Hatfield Award 2024! 🌟
The award supports four brilliant young researchers and activists to investigate topics related to community, social action and/or social justice. 🙏
When psychs attempted to bring insights to hospitals in 1950s about how children’s health cd be improved through relational care, many doctors & nurses felt offended. There are insights to be gained from this history for education today. #FierceCuriosity https://t.co/vsbdWKgWzP
As Lord Patel said, this should have been in a Bill, with full debate & possibility of amendment in both Houses.
And the "no time" argument doesn't hold water. We wasted many days on Schools Bill that ultimately collapsed. Not to mention #RwandaBill
Results are out for the guaranteed basic income pilot in Paterson, New Jersey where 110 people got $400/mo for a year.
Pilot participants increased their incomes significantly to $24,810 from an average of $16,604. The control group ended up at $19k.
While the control group's ability to cover a $400 emergency sharply declined, basic income recipients not only maintained their ability, but over 15% saved more than $500.
Mental health improved. Distress levels went down.
Social ties within the community improved. People did more work in their community.

How to define & understand problems to get better results from change initiatives. Often results are not delivered because (time pressured) leaders jump straight into problem-solving actions without making the time & space to understand & define what the problem is. Here's the "E5" approach to problem-framing:
1) Expand: explore all aspects of a problem & its nuances
2) Examine: understand underlying drivers & systemic contributors to the problem
3) Empathise: consider the perspectives of those who are most central to & affected by the problem
4) Elevate: understand how the problem connects to broader system issues
5) Envision: actively imagine & design solutions to the problem
