President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate commencement of efforts to clear more than 300 containers of electricity equipment stranded at Nigerian ports, with some reportedly held for between 14 and 20 years over unpaid charges and unresolved customs procedures.
The directive forms part of the Federal Government’s efforts to recover potentially usable power infrastructure and address longstanding constraints in Nigeria’s electricity transmission network.
Minister of Power, Olasunkanmi Tegbe, disclosed the development on Wednesday while briefing journalists after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by Tinubu at the State House, Abuja.
Tegbe described the prolonged detention of the equipment as unacceptable, saying the containers had remained at the ports for years because previous administrations failed to settle outstanding charges and complete the necessary clearance processes.
According to the minister, the President directed the Ministry of Power to work with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to resolve the outstanding issues and facilitate the release of the equipment.
Tinubu also instructed the relevant agencies to reconcile outstanding charges where necessary to bring the prolonged delays to an end.
The minister explained that technical experts would inspect the equipment after clearance to determine its condition and suitability for deployment across the country’s electricity network.
He said materials found to be serviceable would be incorporated into ongoing power infrastructure projects, while obsolete or unusable equipment would be handled appropriately.
Heated Argument Between Rufai Oseni and Felix Morka After Journalist Questions APC Spokesperson About Nigeria’s Economic Conditions
“All President Tinubu needed to do in Kaduna was show up and tell people to support me again,” APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka said.
Morka defended President Tinubu’s remarks at a campaign rally in Kaduna, insisting that it was not a policy summit or dialogue where he was expected to deliver a policy speech to appease what he described as “opposition tribesmen dressed as journalists.”
During the heated exchange, Rufai Oseni told Morka that he had yet to answer his question about the current state of Nigeria’s economy, adding that he should respond whenever he was ready to answer.
“President Tinubu cannot be blamed for how backward the North is. As of 2023, the North accounted for 70% of children out of school. If you have ruled or been in government in the northern part of the country since 1999, you share in this blame.”

The 12 states that President Tinubu chose to campaign in are actually election deciders, he should be commended for that. He is not going to abandon governance for campaigning.

"One of the biggest problems for foreign investors in this country for many years has been the lack of easy availability of foreign exchange. As foreign investors, one of the key changes that President Tinubu has made in the first few days of his tenure is allowing the naira to float freely in the market, letting market forces decide its value. In Nigeria, and generally across the board, there is palpable excitement among investors and companies planning to establish their bases here."
