Charles Massey says Regen Ag is, besides forestry, the most effective tool for drawing down carbon in his 100 Climate Conversations interview. Planting trees is not enough, the carbon is only safe when the wood is used. 10cm block holds this much CO2 https://t.co/fhtqFVU1yN
Compare the pair: The pine inside the big green shed is from NZ, the Aussie pine is out in the yard. The NZ pine is about $2700/m3 compared to less than $1700/m3 (nomial size). The difference: NZ pine was pruned. Growing volume will not replace imports. We need to grow quality.
What the native timber industry didn't want you to know: You can grow old growth quality eucalypt timber in less than 40 years.

There is more to creating a culture of tree growing than planting trees.

@karst_justine asks us to be careful when communicating #science. Don’t let your personal bias affect the facts you represent. It makes it harder for everyone in the end.

Very satisfying to open a log and see how effective our early pruning has been in confining the branch knots to the central core. This allows us to cut knot-free boards from the clearwood zone.

Our 35-yr-old Mountain Ash. Pruned log is 5.5m and over 85cm in diameter. Volume of 3.5m3.
Logs like this don't grow in dense plantations - but they can be grown on farms in parklands, conservation plantings and belts.
Changing forestry so it works for farmers.
