In the 1990s, Net Zero immigration was a mainstream environmental and centre-left minor party position.
The Australian Comservation Foundation, Australians for an Ecologically Sustainable Population, the Democrats and the Australian Greens all supported zero or very low net migration on ecological grounds.
The argument was that Australia’s carrying capacity is limited and the environment was already under stress at about 18 million people.
A 1994 Australian Academy of Science symposium (“Population 2040”) produced a joint statement that quality of life would be maximised if the mid-21st-century population were kept toward the lower, stable end of the plausible range (around 23 million). Which was a suggestion of 50k annually to stabilise a population at 23 million by 2040.
For reference, In 2026, we have a population of 28 million.
Pauline Hanson adopted a similar numbers policy, adding her concerns about a multicultural Australia.
With Paulines rise and success in Qld, the Liberal party took aim at her. The Greens, having the same numbers policy, completely abandoned it, not wishing to face the same criticisms the Liberal party directed at Pauline. Essentially, they sided with the Liberal party against what they'd previously accepted to be ecollogically better policy. Of course, they reframed it as pro diversity, and humane.
With Hawke leading Labor, he referred to himself as a "big immigration man". The Howard government focussed on skills, gradually moving into the idea of a Big Australia. A policy of mass immigration was ultimately accepted by Liberals, Greens and Labor. The Greens removed the idea of a population cap all together. All three collectively led a 2000s movement for big Australia and mass immigration, against the interests of Australians.
Low to no immigration was previously argued as better for the quality of life of Australians and the best option to protect our natural environment. The ecological low-migration case did not disappear.
One Nation is the only paliamentary party who held the line.
@DrewPavlou Beggers. Go work like the rest of is have to. I didn't even get to rest after giving birth. I had taxes to pay and had to go to work with a newborn.
This is uncomfortable viewing for me. Takes me back to when I was attacked by a mob of some 200 men in Tahrir Square in Cairo, when I was reporting for 60 Minutes and I was gang-raped, sodomized & beaten. Mob violence is a call to the worst of humanity because it is cover for cowards.
@Fortin10593465@zhamm@RealBababanaras No pilot is bombing "innocent" people in Gaza. They have some of the most precise strikes in the world. Which is why so few have died.
Men who claim to be women are a category of men, on the basis that they are men. Creating a category of men who are exempt from or above the law has been tried many times & always failed in exactly the ways you’d expect.
Making it a criminal offense for a woman (@doramoutot) to point this out gives the worst men in society a legal loophole to have power over & punish women. Only the bad men win.
Listen to Shoebridge losing his shit when asked "Where does this anger and hatred come from". David Shoebridge becomes defensive and flustered about his party's obsession with the middle east and starts attacking the radio host. Well done to James Willis 👏
@DavidShoebridge Turns out furrys and terrorists dont like volunteering. Good luck getting your core base off their mums couch after having all your female volunteers removed for wanting women to have safe spaces.
