John F. Kennedy smoking a cigar. He’d buy 1,200 Cuban cigars the day before signing the US embargo on Cuba, banning all imports from Cuba, 1962....

The story is one of the most famous anecdotes of the Cuban Embargo. According to presidential aide Pierre Salinger, President John F. Kennedy asked him to obtain a large supply of his favorite Cuban cigars before the embargo took effect. Salinger reportedly returned with about 1,200 Petit Upmann cigars, after which Kennedy signed the order restricting imports from Cuba.

The embargo was imposed during one of the most tense periods of the Cold War. Following the Cuban Revolution and Cuba's growing alliance with the Soviet Union, the United States sought to isolate the government of Fidel Castro through economic pressure. The restrictions introduced in the early 1960s would become one of the longest-running sanctions programs in modern history.

The embargo Kennedy expanded in 1962 remains largely in place more than 60 years later, making it one of the longest-lasting trade embargoes ever imposed by one country against another. Ironically, Kennedy's favorite Cuban cigar brand, H. Upmann, continued to be produced in Cuba and became even more sought after in the United States because Americans could no longer legally import it.
