Yes, CNG can make a converted bus cheaper to run. But the driver still buys expensive tyres, spare parts and food — and the passenger’s empty pocket has no conversion kit.

After the subsidy-removal shock travelled from the filling station to the motor park, the farm, the market and finally the Nigerian kitchen, 120,000 converted vehicles cannot be presented as salvation for over 200 million people.

The problem is no longer simply what powers the bus.

It is whether Nigerians can afford to board it.
