The death penalty is fundamentally a poor person’s issue. Over nearly 40 years of visiting death row facilities across the United States, I have never met a single person with money or resources. Capital punishment means “those without the capital get the punishment.”
No one can tell me that if it had been a group of Black Lives Matter protestors yesterday that they wouldn’t have been treated very differently than the mob that stormed the Capitol.
We all know that’s true — and it’s unacceptable.
Moral of the story: your experiences do not reflect everybody else’s experiences. Put yourselves in others’ shoes and you may see the world in a new light. You don’t have to directly experience an issue in order for the issue to exist.
This is my issue with the GOP - they only care about things that directly affect them. This is true for LGBTQ rights, systemic racism, healthcare, etc. Once an issue becomes their own issue, they want immediate results. They are incapable of putting themselves in others’ shoes.
Whenever I talk to someone about racism in America they always say something about their Black friend and how successful they are. However, they’ve never asked that Black friend how they got there, the extra work it took, the biases they face every day.
