Every year, CEHURD brings together law students from universities across Uganda to test their legal knowledge, sharpen their courtroom advocacy skills and engage critically with health, human rights and justice.
As we count down the days to this yearโs ๐๐๐ญ๐ก ๐๐ง๐ง๐ฎ๐๐ฅ ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐๐ฅ ๐๐ง๐ญ๐๐ซ-๐๐ง๐ข๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ญ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐๐ฅ ๐๐๐ฐ ๐๐จ๐จ๐ญ ๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ญ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐๐ญ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง, we are also hearing from the Moot Coordinators who have been part of this journey for close to 13 years.
Through their reflections, they share what the CEHURD Moot means to their students, the skills it builds and how the experience contributes to shaping courageous advocates for justice and human dignity.
We begin with Mr Habu Eric, Moot Coordinator at @UPU_Uganda , Fort Portal Campus, who reminds us that for students, the CEHURD Moot is about more than stepping into a courtroom and competing for a trophy. It is a journey of learning, challenge and growth, where students develop the confidence and courage to use the law to make a difference in society.
Lecturing at university demands the highest academic credentials of all jobs in Uganda. The nature of the work is also such that there are hardly any real breaks. But when it comes to payment, even those who only need S.6 are paid more than five times higher.
What logic informs remuneration in Uganda? Influence? Amount of work? Academic qualifications? Politics? Lobbying?
โEmotional intelligence is the ability to control your emotions and the emotions of those around you, especially when things have blown out of proportion. Your ability to be employable is no longer determined by your IQ alone, but by your EQ as well.โ

โI am excited to serve as Attorney General. I have reached the peak of my legal career and cannot go any furtherโI am now Head of the Bar. I give it my all. I thank the President for the confidence he has placed in me. I am truly humbled, and I will do my best to ensure that my President does not regret appointing me to this position.โ

"Only six categories of people should handle land transactions in the registries: advocates with valid practicing certificates, architects, surveyors, valuers, and bank officers at officer level. No other person should be seen in the premises of a land office. I enforced it for a time. But the bar didn't come to support me and slowly, slowly, the brokers began coming back."
Hon. Dr. Sam Mayanja, Attorney General of the Republic of Uganda speaking @JSConversations@elisonk
"A shabby lawyer is not one of us. A poor lawyer is not one of us. Every lawyer is intelligent. Every lawyer is smart. We must maintain those standards. When you address the court, even if you have lost, you say, with due respect, I differ. That is part of the profession. The ethos of professionalism must always be encouraged."
Hon. Dr. Sam Mayanja, Attorney General of the Republic of Uganda speaking @JSConversations@elisonk
"You have 24 judges at the Supreme Court. Each judge has a house of a certain category. Each judge has a car costing 600 million shillings. That car must be maintained not only during the ten years of that judge's service, but even after he retires, up to his date of departure from this world. This is not sustainable."
Dr. Sam Mayanja, Attorney General of the Republic of Uganda speaking @JSConversations@elisonk
"A judge who is annoyed gives a fine of 200 million shillings and puts a lawyer in prison for several years for contempt of court. What are you trying to demonstrate? When you are dispensing justice, you are not looking at the lawyer in front of you. You are looking at the person he represents. You are looking at justice itself."
Dr. Sam Mayanja, Attorney General of the Republic of Uganda speaking @JSConversations@elisonk
High Court Holds That Counselโs Error in Using the Wrong Procedure (Notice of Appeal Instead of a Memorandum of Appeal) May Constitute Sufficient Cause for Enlargement of Time, Provided It Amounts to an Error of Judgment Rather Than Inordinate Delay or Negligence
The Court found that prior counsel attempted to commence the appeal using the wrong procedure by filing a Notice of Appeal on March 28, 2023, instead of a Memorandum of Appeal as required by Order XL Rule 1 of the Civil Procedure Rules.
The Court held this mistake of counsel constituted sufficient cause, citing Florence Nabatanzi v Naome Binsobeddeย (Supreme Court Civil Application No. 6 of 1987).

MEMBERS NOTICE: BRIDGING THE GAP & FUTURE-PROOFING OUR LEGAL AID CLINICS
On Tuesday, August 19, 2025, our Governing Council continued its nationwide โLEVEL UPโ assessment by visiting the Kabale LAP Clinic, as part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration between @ug_lawsociety members and @lap_uls clinics.
Advocates at the clinic expressed gratitude to the #RadicalNewBar for recognizing and engaging with upcountry legal affairs. In turn, the Council emphasized the importance of accurate and consistent record-keeping across all districts under their jurisdiction.
Later, the Council proceeded to Kabale High Court to assess how conducive and convenient the environment is for litigants. During the visit, no complaints were raised by any of the litigants present.
