With active flooding in parts of Ontario and more rain in the forecast, we want to remind customers about simple steps you can take to stay safe and be prepared.
🌧️Help keep water away from your home
Clear debris from gutters, eavestroughs, and downspouts. If you have a sump pump, make sure it’s well maintained and consider a backup power source, such as a battery or generator.
🔌Water and electricity don’t mix
If flooding occurs and water starts to reach electrical outlets, baseboard heaters, or your furnace, call us at 1-800-434-1235 to have power safely turned off. Do not enter flooded areas, such as basements, until power is disconnected. When outdoors, stay clear of ground level electrical equipment like pad mounted transformers.
👜Restock your emergency kit
Having an emergency kit ready is critical during flooding or an extended power outage. Learn what to include and how to prepare at: https://t.co/hFC4g8f5aU
We’re here to support our customers and communities. Please stay safe.
Reminder that as of April 1st, the Town of Bancroft is under a "No Daytime Burning" ban. This means there is to be no burning or outside fires between the hours of 7am and 7pm. For more information please check our website at https://t.co/l2jl6TIIyJ
We continue to encourage customers to prepare for the potential of an extended outage as high winds are forecast for today into Monday.
How to prepare for an outage:
•Restock your emergency kit with items like water, nonperishable food and cash: https://t.co/jILcKh2XkJ
•Download the Hydro One app https://t.co/4ccR4hqmi6 to access the outage map for updates and to view your current estimated time of restoration.
•Report outages by texting 92887 (WATTS), through the outage map and app, or by calling us at 1-800-434-1235.
Safety is our priority. If outages occur, it’s critical to stay at least 10 metres back from any fallen power lines and report it to 911 and to Hydro One. If you're using a generator, ensure it's outside and away from any windows or ventilation.
Freezing rain is expected in parts of central and eastern Ontario resulting in ice buildup on power lines, tree limbs and equipment, potentially causing power outages. We’re monitoring the weather closely and are ready to restore power as quickly and safely as possible if outages occur. Parts of southern Ontario are expecting significant rainfall. If indoor flooding reaches electrical outlets, baseboard heaters or your furnace, please call 1 800 434 1235 to have your power safely disconnected: https://t.co/pzI6apFN1O.
Don't forget today is spring time change, and the perfect opportunity to test and change your smoke and CO detector batteries! If your detector has a built in lifetime battery then you can give it a test and check the expiry date. Remember, they're good for 10 years max!
Winter’s here and the heat is on - but let’s keep it safe.
Heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fires in Ontario during the colder months.
Whether you're using a space heater, fireplace or furnace, here’s how to stay warm without risking a fire:
Keep anything that can burn (like blankets, curtains, and furniture) at least one metre away from heat sources
Turn off space heaters when you leave the room or go to sleep.
Never use your oven or stove to heat your home
Have your furnace and chimney inspected annually by a professional
Make sure smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working and tested monthly
Stay cozy, stay safe and make fire prevention part of your winter routine.
January is a great time to refresh your fire escape plan. Make fire safety part of your new routines: know two ways out, clear exits, check your meeting spot, and practice your plan. Fire doesn’t wait - planning ahead brings peace of mind when seconds count.
❗️Winter Brings Snow and Ice. Plan Ahead for Safe Travel
Weather conditions can change quickly, creating hazards such as ice, snow, and reduced visibility.
OPP urges everyone to:
✔️Monitor https://t.co/0R0h19qD0n for real-time road updates.
✔️Check https://t.co/yw9xzek5Vt for current alerts.
✔️ Share the Road with Snow Plows:
- Leave plenty of space behind snow plows.
- Never pass working plows when they’re deployed in echelon formation on multi-lane roads or highways with speed limits of 80 km/h or higher. You may only pass if the lane is completely clear of the plow and its blade.
✔️Motorists should:
- Avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.
- Be prepared for low visibility and slippery conditions.
- Slow down and leave extra space between vehicles.
- Turn on full headlights.
- Take your time to arrive safely.
🚨In case of emergency, call 911. For non-emergency matters, contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
